Chapter 1 - where's the vault key

The grand entrance foyer of the Whitfield estate was a testament to absolute power. High arched ceilings were illuminated by massive crystal chandeliers, casting a warm glow across polished white marble floors. But the serene atmosphere shattered in an instant as a heavy thud echoed through the hall.

Daniel Whitfield lay motionless at the bottom of the grand marble staircase. The tall, broad-shouldered Mafia boss—a man whose very name made hardened street commanders bow their heads—was sprawled across the cold stone floor. His dark-brown hair was slightly disheveled, framing a sharp, ruggedly handsome face. Clad in a perfectly tailored black suit, black dress shirt, and polished leather shoes, he looked strangely vulnerable in the middle of his vast palace.

At the sound of the crash, Grace Parker dropped her cleaning supplies in the adjacent hallway and ran toward the foyer. Dressed in her neat pale-blue maid uniform with a pristine white apron, her soft brown hair tied into a loose bun, Grace didn't hesitate for a single second.

She dropped to her knees beside Daniel, her fair, rosy cheeks pale with immediate concern.

At the top of the marble staircase stood Vanessa Cole. Daniel’s glamorous fiancée was frozen like a statue against the gilded railing. Dressed in a luxurious pale-pink evening gown, her long blonde hair falling over her shoulders, Vanessa wore diamond earrings and a glittering bracelet that caught the light. Her blue eyes were wide, but her hands remained glued to her silk dress.

"Mr. Whitfield, don’t move. Please," Grace panicked, her voice trembling with raw worry as she reached out to evaluate him.

Grace quickly pulled a clean white cotton towel from her apron pocket and pressed it firmly against the cut above Daniel’s eyebrow, shielding his eyes while reaching into her apron for her phone to call the estate's private medical team.

Up at the landing, Vanessa remained completely motionless for several long seconds, her breath catching in her throat, before she finally began to slowly hurry down the winding staircase, her heels clicking against the marble steps.

Beneath his closed eyelids, Daniel kept his eyes half-open. The frighteningly calm Mafia boss was entirely conscious, silently watching both women through his dark lashes.

Grace was completely focused on keeping him still, her gentle hands pressing firmly on his wound to stop the bleeding. Her calm demeanor under pressure shone through her worry. "Stay with me. Tell me what day it is," Grace urged softly, her brown eyes searching his face for any sign of a concussion.

Vanessa, meanwhile, looked shaken as she reached the middle landing, but her eyes kept nervously darting across his suit jacket and trousers rather than showing genuine care for his well-being. She didn't offer to touch him or lend a hand.

Daniel’s mind flashed back to two days prior inside the mansion's vast gourmet kitchen. Vanessa had stood near the marble island, holding her jewelry box while Grace stood humiliated near the counters. Vanessa had publicly accused Grace of misplacing her signature diamond bracelet, letting the implication hang in the air to embarrass the hardworking maid in front of the entire household staff. When Grace had calmly defended her integrity, Vanessa had simply offered a tight, calculating smile, stating coldly, "I never said you stole it."

Back in the foyer, Daniel remained still, intentionally pretending to be far weaker than he actually was. He wanted to see how both women reacted when they thought the ruler of the empire was down.

Grace kept firm pressure on his forehead, kneeling on the hard floor without a second thought for her own comfort. "Help is on the way, sir. Just keep breathing."

Vanessa finally reached the bottom step, her pale-pink gown trailing behind her. She stood two feet away from Daniel, staring down at his motionless body. As Grace leaned over Daniel to check his pulse, Vanessa’s eyes suddenly dropped past Grace's shoulder, fixing intently on Daniel’s open palm resting on the marble floor.

Vanessa leaned in slightly, her voice dropping into an urgent whisper under her breath.

"Where’s the vault key?"
