Chapter 2 - a quiet allegiance

The words hung in the air like ice. Grace froze for a split second, her eyes flicking toward Vanessa, but she didn't say a word. Her primary concern remained the man lying injured beneath her hands.
Daniel’s hand on the marble floor twitched almost imperceptibly. He had heard the whisper clearly. The vault key—a small, solid platinum card that granted access to the subterranean security vault beneath the mansion—was tucked safely inside his inner coat pocket. Vanessa hadn't asked if he was breathing. She hadn't asked if he had broken his neck. She only cared about the key.
Footsteps rushed down the hallway as the estate's private doctor and two security guards arrived.
"Step back, please," the physician instructed, kneeling beside Grace. "You did well holding pressure, Grace. Let us take over."
Grace stepped back quietly, wiping her hands on her white apron. Vanessa immediately stepped into the space, adopting a frantic, tearful expression for the medical team.
"Oh, thank goodness you're here!" Vanessa cried softly, placing a delicate hand over her chest. "He just lost his footing on the top step! I tried to catch him, but it happened so fast!"
Daniel allowed the paramedics to lift him onto a stretcher, keeping his eyes heavy and his voice slurred as he offered a low groan. "My head..."
"Concussion, most likely," the doctor noted, wheeling Daniel toward his private ground-floor suite. "He needs total rest. No stress, no business."
An hour later, the master bedroom was quiet. Deep mahogany furniture, heavy velvet curtains, and warm lamp light created a peaceful atmosphere. Daniel lay in the center of the massive king-sized bed, a small white bandage covering his eyebrow.
Vanessa sat in a chair near the window, frantically tapping on her phone, typing encrypted messages under her breath. She believed Daniel was fast asleep under the heavy painkillers the doctor had administered.
The bedroom door clicked open silently. Grace entered carrying a silver tray with a pitcher of fresh ice water and a warm compress.
Vanessa stood up instantly, stepping between Grace and the bed, her tall frame blocking the way. "Leave the tray on the nightstand and get out, Grace. I am looking after my fiancé tonight."
Grace looked past Vanessa toward Daniel, noticing the subtle tension in his jaw. "The doctor requested that his dressing be changed every two hours, Miss Cole. I am simply following orders."
"I said leave," Vanessa snapped in a low, furious whisper. "You are a maid in this house. You don't tell me what to do."
"She stays," a deep, rumbling voice echoed from the bed.
Both women turned in shock. Daniel was sitting up slowly, his dark eyes sharp, intense, and completely devoid of any medication-induced haze. He looked directly at Vanessa, his expression frighteningly calm.
"Vanessa," Daniel said, his commanding tone making the room grow still. "Go to your room. I need Grace to update the house log."
Vanessa’s jaw tightened, her cheeks flushing with quiet anger, but she forced a sweet, obedient smile. "Of course, darling. I just want you to rest. We can talk about... household matters in the morning."
She turned on her heel and glided out of the room, her pink gown rustling against the floorboards.
Once the door clicked shut, Grace walked over to the bedside, setting the silver tray down with practiced gentleness. "You shouldn't be sitting up so quickly, Mr. Whitfield."
Daniel looked up at her. His dark eyes searched her calm face, noticing the slight bruise on her wrist where she had caught herself while kneeling to help him earlier.
"You didn't leave my side," Daniel noted quietly.
"It's my job to take care of this house, sir," Grace replied, dampening the cloth in the warm water. "And that includes you."
"When I was on the floor," Daniel said, leaning forward slightly, "what did Vanessa say to you?"
May you like
Grace paused, the wet cloth hovering over the water bowl. She looked into Daniel's eyes, weighing the consequence of her words against her loyalty to the truth.
"She wasn't speaking to me, sir," Grace answered softly. "She was looking at your coat pocket. She was looking for your key."
