Chapter 10 - the threshold of sixteen

By the following evening, a quiet, peaceful atmosphere returned to the Whitfield estate. The rain had cleared, leaving the night sky filled with brilliant, twinkling stars.
Inside the grand study, a warm fire crackled in the marble hearth, casting a soft golden light across the room.
Grace stood near the bookshelf, holding a tray with a warm cup of coffee. She wore a soft light-yellow dress instead of her usual maid uniform—a gift from Daniel earlier that afternoon. Her dark brown hair fell gently around her shoulders, highlighting her fair, rosy cheeks and radiant smile.
Daniel stood by the large bay window, looking out at the peaceful grounds. He had discarded his suit jacket, wearing a relaxed black dress shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his forearms.
He turned as Grace walked over, setting the coffee cup on his desk.
"You look beautiful, Grace," Daniel said softly, his deep voice filled with genuine warmth.
Grace blushed softly, offering a timid, happy smile. "Thank you, Mr. Whitfield... I mean, Daniel."
Daniel walked over to her, stopping just inches away. He reached out with his large, calloused hand, gently taking her soft fingers in his. "You saved this estate, Grace. You saved me. From the moment I fell on those stairs and saw you kneeling beside me, I knew you were different from anyone I had ever met."
"I was just doing what was right," Grace murmured, looking up into his piercing dark eyes.
"You were being loyal," Daniel corrected gently, raising her hand to his lips and pressing a tender kiss against her knuckles. "And in my world, loyalty like yours is priceless."
He led her over to the dark oak desk. Resting on the blotter was the heavy leather-bound vault ledger they had opened the night before.
"There's one more thing you need to see," Daniel said, opening the ledger to the very last page.
Grace looked down at the parchment. Page after page listed accounts and records, but the sixteenth page was marked with an old, hand-drawn seal depicting a lion wrapping its paws around a heart.
Below the seal was a single line written in fresh black ink: Account Sixteen: The Master Share of the Whitfield Estate—Transferred to Grace Parker.
Grace gasped, her eyes widening in shock. "Daniel... no... I can't accept this! This is your family's legacy!"
"My family's legacy was built on protection," Daniel said firmly, wrapping his broad arms gently around her waist, pulling her close against his chest. "And everything in this book belongs to the woman who protects my heart."
Grace looked up at him, her heart swelling with an overwhelming love. She leaned up on her tiptoes, pressing a soft, passionate kiss against his lips. Daniel held her tight, kissing her back with deep, protective devotion as the fireplace crackled softly in the quiet room.

Yet as Daniel held Grace in his arms, his eyes drifted back toward the open ledger on the desk.
Tucked behind the sixteenth page was a small, sealed black envelope marked with an unfamiliar, crestless wax seal from across the ocean—containing a message that suggested Victor Bellandi was merely a lieutenant for a far greater power watching from the shadows...
