Chapter 5 - the fiancée's secret

Night fell heavy over the mansion. Shadows stretched across the grand corridors as the household staff retired to their quarters.
In the second-floor east wing, Vanessa stood near the dark oak vanity in her lavish bedroom. She was dressed in a dark silk robe, her long blonde hair tied back tightly. Her hands trembled as she pressed an encrypted satellite phone to her ear.
"He knows something," Vanessa whispered frantically into the receiver, her voice strained with panic. "He embarrassed me at breakfast in front of the staff! He's watching me!"
A raspy, cold voice echoed from the phone speaker. "Did you get the vault key?"
"No! The maid was hovering over him like a hawk!" Vanessa hissed, pacing across the plush carpet. "And then Daniel woke up. I couldn't search his coat!"
"You have forty-eight hours, Vanessa," the voice on the line warned, cold and uncompromising. "The Bellandi syndicate didn't spend three years funding your social profile just for you to fail at the finish line. Get the platinum card, or we leak the documents linking your father's company to our illegal harbor operations."
Vanessa bit her lip hard, tears of frustration glinting in her eyes. "Fine! He left his study unlocked tonight. He’s taking his rest in the master bedroom. I’ll go down now."
She clicked the burner phone off, slid it beneath her mattress, and opened her bedroom door.
The hallway was quiet and dim. Vanessa glided silently down the corridor toward the grand staircase, avoiding the squeaky floorboards with practiced ease.
She reached the ground floor, slipping like a phantom into the dark corridor leading to Daniel’s private study.
She pushed the heavy mahogany door open. The room was dark, illuminated only by the faint silvery moonlight filtering through the tall windows.
Vanessa headed straight for the marble desk. She dropped to her knees behind the desk, pulling a small tactical flashlight from her robe pocket. She began pulling open the heavy wooden drawers, searching through files, leather folders, and iron boxes.
"Looking for this?"
The bright overhead lights flickered on, illuminating the study in sharp, golden clarity.
Vanessa gasped, whirling around on the floor.
Standing in the doorway was Daniel. He was imposing and terrifying, dressed in his black trousers and a black dress shirt with the top buttons undone, displaying his rugged, masculine frame. His broad shoulders blocked the exit entirely.
Standing half a step behind him was Grace, wearing her pale-blue maid uniform, holding a heavy iron flashlight in her hand.
Vanessa’s flashlight dropped onto the carpet, rolling away. Her heart hammered wildly against her ribs. "Daniel! I... I was just looking for a book! I couldn't sleep!"
"At two in the morning?" Daniel asked, his voice dropping into a razor-sharp whisper as he took three slow, deliberate steps into the room. "Behind my desk? In the lockbox drawer?"

Vanessa scrambled to her feet, trying to adjust her dark silk robe, but her glamorous composure had completely shattered. "I swear, darling—"
"Stop lying, Vanessa," Daniel growled, stopping two feet away from her. "I know who you work for. I know about the Bellandis."
