Chapter 9 - the strike at dawn

Midnight arrived under a pitch-black sky. Heavy rain poured over the Whitfield estate, washing across the manicured lawns and stone walkways.

Outside the outer west gate, three dark SUVs sat silently in the shadows, their headlights off. Six heavily armed men in raincoats stepped out, led by Victor Bellandi—the ruthless leader of the rival syndicate.

Victor checked his encrypted radio. A green light flashed, confirming Vanessa’s signal.

"The gate is open," Victor whispered to his men. "We go straight for the subterranean vault. Eliminate anyone who gets in the way."

The six men slipped through the opened iron gates, moving quickly along the dark garden paths toward the west wing basement entrance. They picked the outer lock, slipping inside the dimly lit service corridor.

They reached the heavy steel vault door. Victor stepped forward, reaching into his pocket for the platinum card Vanessa had promised to leave in the external card reader.

The reader was empty.

Suddenly, heavy iron shutters slammed down behind them, sealing the service corridor completely! Red emergency lights flashed along the ceiling as a loud, mechanical lockdown siren echoed through the walls.

Bright floodlights snapped on, blinding Victor and his men.

Standing at the far end of the corridor was Daniel Whitfield. He stood tall and unbothered, flanked by twenty heavily armed Whitfield security officers with weapons raised.

"Welcome to my home, Victor," Daniel’s voice boomed over the intercom, calm and lethal.

Victor dropped his weapon in sheer panic, realizing they had walked directly into a masterfully executed trap. "Whitfield! Wait—"

"Drop your weapons," Marcus commanded, stepping forward with his team.

In less than two minutes, Victor Bellandi and his men were disarmed, restrained, and forced to their knees on the concrete floor. The threat that had loomed over the Whitfield empire for over a decade was neutralized without a single shot fired inside the residence.

Upstairs in the grand foyer, the police and federal agents arrived shortly after, taking custody of Victor Bellandi, his conspirators, and Vanessa Cole.

As Vanessa was led out through the front doors in handcuffs, her pale-pink gown ruined, she looked back one last time.

Standing near the top of the grand marble staircase was Daniel. Standing right beside him, her hand resting gently near his, was Grace.

Vanessa wept bitterly as the police doors closed behind her, her greed and betrayal finally bringing her complete downfall.
