Chapter 17 - Noah and Sophie See Each Other Again

The children were not enemies.

That was important.

Two months after the party, Sophie asked:

“Can I see Noah?”

Dr. Harper approved a short visit with both parents and caregivers present.

Neutral playground.

No mansion.

No engagement history.

No tables.

Sophie arrived carrying a small toy truck.

Noah ran toward her.

“Fifi!”

Sophie started crying.

He stopped.

Then:

“Sad?”

“Yes.”

He held out his hand.

She gave him the truck.

“Mine?”

“For you.”

Daniel said quietly:

“You did not have to bring anything.”

Good.

No guilt gift requirement.

Sophie sat on a bench.

Noah climbed beside her.

He pointed at a snack bag.

“Cracker?”

She gave him one.

Then asked:

“Are you mad I took your chair?”

I nearly interrupted.

Dr. Harper signaled no.

Noah said:

“Chair mine.”

Three-year-old justice.

Sophie nodded.

“I know.”

“Mommy Vicky move.”

“Yes.”

Noah ate cracker.

Then:

“Fifi chair there.”

He pointed at another bench.

Sophie laughed through tears.

No profound forgiveness.

No trauma speech.

They played.

At one point Noah tried to take Sophie’s toy phone.

She said:

“No.”

He screamed.

Margaret said:

“Noah, Sophie said no.”

He screamed louder.

Normal.

No one gave him the phone because he had been victimized.

Recovery does not abolish boundaries.

Sophie watched Margaret handle him.

Later she told Daniel:

“Margaret doesn’t make him special.”

Daniel asked:

“What?”

“She says no too.”

There.

Sophie had interpreted Victoria’s chair test as:

Noah gets everything because he is Raffaele’s son.

Seeing ordinary limits helped.

The blended family had never needed ranking.

May you like

It needed normal rules.
