Chapter 1 - The Blanket in the Shadow

The grand dining hall of the Moretti estate was bathed in the warm, golden glow of crystal chandeliers. Heavy mahogany doors separated the formal memorial dinner from the bustling service corridor where thirty-year-old Anna Bennett adjusted her white apron. Her long brown hair was tied into a neat, practical bun, her beige housekeeping uniform crisp and spotless. Beside her, four-year-old Lily sat on a velvet stool near the kitchen entry, her long light-brown hair held back by a large white bow. She wore a cream floral dress with pale-blue details, her expressive blue eyes watching the waiters carry silver trays into the dining room.
At forty-one, Rocco Moretti sat at the head of the long dining table. Tall, broad-shouldered, and muscular, the feared Chicago mafia boss exuded a commanding presence in his fitted black three-piece suit and open-collar white dress shirt. Light stubble outlined his sharp jaw, and subtle tattoos trailed along his neck and broad hands. Beside his chair stood Caleb Stone, his forty-four-year-old security chief, wearing a sharp charcoal suit and a discreet earpiece.
Suddenly, a faint, rhythmic cry drifted through the heavy oak door leading to the west pantry.
Lily lifted her head, her sharp little ears catching the sound over the low hum of classical music. She slid off her velvet stool and quietly stepped into the shadows of the service hallway, following the soft whimpering.
Inside the quiet pantry, resting on a low shelf beside folded linens, was a thick white knitted blanket.
Seconds later, the service door swung open. Four-year-old Lily emerged from the dark hallway, her small arms carefully cradling a six-day-old infant wrapped securely in the white blanket.
Anna dropped the linen towel in her hands, her face going pale as sheet glass.
Rocco Moretti froze mid-sentence. His piercing blue eyes snapped toward the doorway, taking in the sight of his six-day-old son, Matteo, being held by a toddler. Beside him, Caleb Stone’s face stiffened in absolute shock—Caleb had reported less than five minutes ago that Matteo was fast asleep in the third-floor nursery under heavy guard.
"Sir… your son was crying by the kitchen," Lily said, her small voice clear and worried in the silent hall.
Rocco didn't hesitate. He stood up, his tall frame moving across the marble floor in three long strides. He knelt in front of Lily, his broad, tattooed hands gently taking little Matteo into his arms. He checked the baby’s breathing, ensuring his newborn son was unharmed, before slowly standing up to face his security chief.
Rocco’s expression turned to pure, razor-sharp ice.
Anna stepped forward, placing a protective hand on Lily’s shoulder. Instead of apologizing, her gaze remained steady and controlled as she looked directly at Caleb.
"How did a six-day-old baby get down here without an exit log?" Anna asked, her voice calm and firm.
Caleb’s jaw tightened. He glanced nervously toward a young house footman standing near the kitchen entrance.
Within seconds, the nervous footman stepped forward, holding out a cream-colored nursery memo on a silver tray. Rocco took the paper and unfolded it. The memo claimed that Anna Bennett had personally authorized infant Matteo to be brought down to the service floor for a routine medical check earlier that evening.
Anna immediately shook her head. "I never signed that."
Rocco brought the cream paper closer to the light. He compared the authorization line with Anna’s employee ID details on his wrist monitor.
The username printed on the form was indeed Anna’s—but the master override access code stamped beside it belonged to an executive clearance level that a housekeeper could never possess.
Down beside her mother, little Lily looked toward Caleb’s charcoal jacket. A small corner of an identical cream-colored memo was sticking out of his inner coat pocket.
Lily pointed her tiny finger directly at the security chief.
"He has another one," Lily said softly.

Rocco slowly turned his head toward Caleb Stone.
Caleb’s face went dead pale.
