Chapter 3 - Shadows in the Wing

By midnight, the memorial dinner had been abruptly concluded, and the estate was locked under a tier-one security protocol. Heavy steel shutters descended over the ground-floor windows, and armed guards patrolled every corner of the seventy-acre property.
In the private master suite on the third floor, Anna sat on the edge of a velvet sofa, holding a sleeping Matteo in her arms while Lily curled up beside her, clutching a soft wool pillow.
The heavy door opened, and Rocco walked into the room. He had removed his suit jacket, revealing his muscular broad shoulders beneath his white dress shirt, his sleeves rolled up to his forearms, displaying the intricate tattoos along his wrists.
He walked over to the sofa, looking down at his six-day-old son sleeping peacefully against Anna’s apron.
"He's quiet with you," Rocco remarked softly, his deep voice resonant in the quiet room.
"He was just cold," Anna replied gently, smoothing the edge of the white knitted blanket. "Whoever moved him left him near the cold storage vent in the pantry. If Lily hadn't heard him..."
She didn't finish the sentence, but the sharp pain in her eyes spoke clearly enough.
Rocco pulled out a chair across from her, sitting down. His piercing blue eyes held hers with a quiet, intense focus. "You saved my son tonight, Anna. Both of you."
"I just did what any mother would do," Anna said modestly, adjusting her white collar. "But Mr. Moretti... Caleb Stone has been your security chief for five years. Why would he risk his life to help someone move your child?"
"Because Caleb didn't act alone," Rocco revealed, his voice dropping into a dangerous register. "We swept the Detroit sedan in the driveway twenty minutes ago. We found encrypted radio gear and three forged passports registered under Marcus Vance's name."
Anna gasped softly. "The Detroit director?"
"Marcus Vance has been trying to seize control of our Chicago shipping routes for three years," Rocco explained. "He knew that if he could abduct my newborn son, he could force me to sign over the harbor terminals in exchange for Matteo's safety."
"And Caleb was his inside man," Anna realized, her brow furrowing.
"Caleb was receiving offshore payments through a shell company in the Cayman Islands," Rocco confirmed. "But there is still one thing that doesn't make sense."
"What is that?" Anna asked.
Rocco reached into his suit pocket and pulled out the original cream-colored nursery memo. "The administrative code used to bypass the floor sensors wasn't just Marcus Vance's code. It required a secondary biometric confirmation—a thumbprint scan from someone who lived inside this house."
Anna’s breath caught in her throat. "Someone inside the inner family?"

Before Rocco could answer, the room’s internal intercom chimed with a harsh, high-priority tone.
"Boss," an enforcer’s voice barked over the speaker. "We have a situation in the lower holding cell. Caleb Stone just activated an emergency beacon... and three unidentified sedans have just rammed the main gate."
