Chapter 7 - The Gathering at the Hall

The Chicago Syndicate Council Hall was a massive, gothic stone building located in the heart of the city's historic district. High arched ceilings, stained-glass windows, and heavy oak paneling gave the room an air of ancient, intimidating authority.
At three o'clock, twelve senior directors of the Midwest syndicate sat around a massive oval mahogany table. At the far end sat Julian Moretti—thirty-nine years old, impeccably dressed in a tailored light grey suit, wearing a silver signet ring on his right hand.
Julian stood up, holding a glass of mineral water, his face setting into a dramatic mask of concern.
"Gentlemen of the Council," Julian announced, his voice echoing across the stone room. "We are gathered here today to address a grave failure of leadership. Last night, my cousin Rocco allowed armed mercenaries to breach his personal estate. His newborn son was placed in danger, and his head of security was compromised."
The elder council members murmured among themselves, exchanging uneasy glances.
"Under family law," Julian continued smoothly, "I move that Rocco Moretti be temporarily relieved of his title as Don until a full investigation can be conducted."
The heavy double doors at the rear of the hall crashed open.
Rocco Moretti stepped into the room, his broad frame dressed in a fresh black three-piece suit, his signature black hat resting in his hand. Walking beside him was Anna Bennett, holding little Lily by the hand, while two senior enforcers carried baby Matteo in his woven bassinet.
Julian’s eyes widened in sudden, sharp alarm. "Rocco? What is the meaning of this? You cannot bring household staff into a Council session!"
"I bring the witnesses to your treason, Julian," Rocco said, his deep voice carrying an unbroken, terrifying authority that silenced the entire room.
Rocco walked up to the long mahogany table, setting the leather-bound ledger he had taken from Marcus Vance directly in front of the oldest council member, Don Carmine.
"Read pages forty through sixty, Don Carmine," Rocco commanded softly.
Julian’s face went completely pale. His hand holding the mineral water glass began to shake visibly.
"That... that's fake!" Julian stammered, taking a step backward toward his chair. "Rocco fabricated those files to cover up his own security failures!"
"The ledger contains your encrypted private access key, Julian," Rocco said, stepping closer to his cousin. "The same key that was used on the cream nursery memo to bypass the floor sensors in my house."
Rocco looked down at little Lily standing beside Anna. "Lily... tell the Council who you saw by the service stairs."

Lily looked up at Julian, pointing her small finger directly at his right hand. "The man with the shiny silver ring."
Julian looked down at his own silver signet ring, realizing his elaborate plan had completely shattered in front of the highest authority in the city.
