Chapter 6 - Whispers in the Household

By Saturday morning, the estate had returned to an eerie, watchful calm.

The damaged front gates were repaired, the glass replaced, and extra security patrols swept the seventy-acre grounds every hour.

In the spacious, sunlit kitchen on the first floor, Anna stood folding linen napkins while Lily played happily on the rug with a small wooden puzzle. Newborn Matteo lay in a woven bassinet beside the counter, fast asleep in his white knitted blanket.

The kitchen doors opened, and Rocco walked in. He had shed his suit jacket, wearing only his white dress shirt with the sleeves rolled up, revealing his strong, tattooed arms.

He walked over to the bassinet, looking down at his son with a quiet, protective gaze.

"He sleeps better when you're nearby," Rocco remarked, turning to look at Anna.

"He just likes the sound of the kitchen," Anna said with a small smile. "It reminds him he isn't alone."

Rocco sat down at the wooden prep table, watching Anna work. "Anna... tell me about yourself. How long have you worked for the Moretti estate?"

"Two years," Anna answered softly, smoothing a napkin. "Since my husband passed away in a construction accident in South Chicago. I needed a safe place to raise Lily."

Rocco nodded slowly. "I remember your husband's file. David Bennett. He was an honest man. I personally authorized his pension payout to your family."

Anna blinked in surprise, looking up into his blue eyes. "That was you? I thought it was an insurance company."

"The Moretti family takes care of its own, Anna," Rocco said, his voice deep and sincere. "Even when people don't realize it."

Lily ran over to the table, holding up a completed piece of her wooden puzzle. "Look, Mr. Rocco! I built the castle!"

Rocco let out a low, genuine laugh—a sound that filled the sunlit kitchen with unexpected warmth. He dropped down to one knee, taking the wooden puzzle piece in his large hand.

"That's a very fine castle, Lily," Rocco said with a rare, genuine smile. "Would you like to see a real castle on Sunday?"

Lily’s blue eyes lit up with excitement. "A real one?"

"Yes," Rocco promised gently. "The grand hall in the city. Where we put an end to bad men."

Anna looked at Rocco, her heart giving a subtle, heavy beat against her ribs as she realized how deeply this formidable mafia Don cared for her daughter and his newborn son.

Suddenly, Caleb Stone stepped into the kitchen under armed guard, his hands bound in heavy plastic zip-ties. He looked tired, his charcoal suit rumpled, but his eyes held a desperate, urgent message.

"Boss," Caleb rasped, looking directly at Rocco. "Julian just called an emergency meeting of the Chicago Council for three o'clock today. He’s claiming you are no longer fit to lead after the security breach."

May you like

Rocco stood up smoothly, his face instantly transforming back into absolute steel.

"Then we won't wait for Sunday," Rocco declared. "We go to the Council now."
