Chapter 1 - The Accusation in Marble

The grand marble entrance hall of the Duca estate was cold, quiet, and suffocatingly tense. High above the polished floor, grand crystal chandeliers cast a sharp, golden light across vaulted ceilings, illuminating two dozen nervous staff members standing motionless along the perimeter walls.
At the center of the hall, two broad-shouldered security guards held thirty-one-year-old Elena Carter firmly by her arms. She wore a classic black maid dress with a crisp white collar and a pale white apron. Her long dark-brown hair was gathered into a loose bun, a few soft strands framing a pale, delicate face that was pale with fear. Despite her quiet demeanor, her dark eyes darted vigilantly across the room, watching every movement with practiced caution.
The heavy front double doors swung open with a resounding thud.
Lorenzo Duca walked into the hall. At forty years old, the feared head of the Duca crime syndicate commanded absolute authority without uttering a single word. He was tall, exceptionally broad-shouldered, and sharply handsome, his thick dark hair styled neatly back above a shadowed, stubbled jawline. Subtle dark tattoos peeked out from beneath his white dress shirt collar and the cuffs of his tailored black three-piece suit. A luxury gold watch glinted against his wrist as he carried five-year-old Sophia Carter securely in his left arm.
Walking closely beside Lorenzo’s polished leather shoes was Bruno, his highly trained black-and-tan Doberman. The massive dog moved with quiet, terrifying discipline, his dark eyes scanning the room as his claws clicked softly against the marble floor.
The moment little Sophia spotted her mother being held by the security guards, her small face crumpled in panic. Her long light-brown curls bounced as she squirmed desperately in Lorenzo’s powerful grip, her tiny arms reaching across the open air.
"Mommy!" Sophia cried out, her small voice echoing off the high stone walls.
Lorenzo stopped in the middle of the hall. His intense dark eyes swept over the scene, his jaw tightening as he observed his guards holding the quiet housemaid.
Before Lorenzo could speak, Renata Bellini stepped forward from the shadows of the main staircase. At fifty-two, the senior housekeeper was the picture of stern, severe authority. She wore an elegant dark emerald-green formal dress that rustled softly as she walked, accented by gleaming pearl earrings and delicate gold bracelets. In her gloved hands, she held a heavy, antique jeweled clock crafted from gold and encrusted with sapphires.
"Mr. Duca," Renata declared, her voice cold and impeccably controlled as she held out the clock. "I caught Elena attempting to slip this priceless piece from your private parlor into her personal quarters. Theft inside the Duca household cannot be tolerated."
Elena looked terrified, her lips parting in shock, but she said nothing, knowing that defending herself against the senior housekeeper was useless.

In Lorenzo’s arms, Sophia stopped crying for a fraction of a second. Her tear-filled eyes locked onto Renata with fierce, childlike anger. She raised a small, trembling hand and pointed her finger straight at the housekeeper’s chest.
"She put it there!" Sophia sobbed loudly, her voice ringing clear through the silent hall. "I saw her! She put the clock in Mommy’s bag when Mommy was folding towels!"
