Chapter 4 - Shadows at the Door

The storm outside grew wilder, thunder rattling the heavy glass frames of the private study. Inside, Lorenzo stood motionless, his dark eyes fixed on the sliver of light beneath the mahogany door.

Beside the desk, Bruno raised his head, a low, silent vibration pulsing through the dog's chest as his eyes locked onto the doorway.

Lorenzo raised a single finger, signaling Marco to remain silent.

With silent, predatory grace, Marco slipped his hand inside his suit jacket, gripping his suppressed sidearm as he stepped across the thick Persian rug. He reached the door in three silent strides, grabbed the brass handle, and yanked the heavy door wide open.

The hallway outside was empty. The dark corridor stretched long and silent toward the grand staircase.

Marco stepped out, his sharp eyes scanning the shadows. Sitting on the small marble side table directly beside the doorway was a silver tray holding a carafe of chilled water and a single glass—a subtle cover left behind by someone who had just stepped away.

Marco walked back into the study, closing the door firmly behind him. "She slipped away through the service passage. She knows we’re pulling her files."

Lorenzo picked up the black-and-gold pendant from the desk, letting the heavy gold crest rest in his palm. The metal felt cold, carrying fifteen years of blood, secrets, and betrayal.

"If Renata was listening, then her handlers already know Elena is alive," Lorenzo said, his voice dropping into a dangerous register. "Marco, shut down the estate's external network. Cut all landlines and block satellite transmissions leaving this property."

"Already done, Boss," Marco replied, adjusting his earpiece. "The estate is on local blackout. No data enters or leaves without my personal key."

Lorenzo picked up the faded photograph once more, looking at the sixteen-year-old Elena standing beside his late father. "Where is she now?"

"She and the child are locked in the west suite on the third floor," Marco said. "Two of my best men are posted outside her door."

Lorenzo walked to the desk drawer, pulled out a heavy key, and turned toward the door. "I'm going to talk to her alone."

A few minutes later, Lorenzo walked down the quiet third-floor corridor of the west wing. He signaled his guards to stand down, unlocked the heavy wooden door, and stepped into the softly lit guest suite.

Elena was sitting on the edge of a velvet armchair, holding a sleeping Sophia in her lap. The little girl was tucked under a warm blanket, her light-brown curls resting against Elena’s shoulder.

Elena looked up instantly as Lorenzo entered, her body tense, her dark eyes wide with defensive caution.

Lorenzo set the heavy key on the side table and sat on the wooden chair across from her, his large frame filling the dim space. He reached into his pocket and placed the black-and-gold pendant gently onto the small table between them.

"Fifteen years ago, my father’s entire inner circle was slaughtered in a single night," Lorenzo said softly, his dark eyes locking onto hers. "My brothers, my uncles, my guards. The police declared it a rival mob hit. But I knew the security codes were breached from the inside."

Elena swallowed hard, her chest heaving as she held her daughter tighter.

"You were sixteen years old, Elena," Lorenzo continued, his baritone voice calm yet piercing. "You vanished that same night. Everyone believed you were dead. Why did you come back to this house as a maid under a fake name?"

Elena looked down at the sleeping child in her arms, tears pooling in her eyes before spilling over her pale cheeks.

"I didn't come back to steal your money, Mr. Duca," Elena whispered, her voice cracking with pure emotion. "I came back because this mansion is the only place with an armored vault strong enough to keep my daughter alive."
