Chapter 6 - The Shattered Vault

Lorenzo pulled his weapon from his shoulder holster, his movements smooth, fast, and practiced. He turned to Elena, grabbing her by her shoulder with his massive, warm hand.
"Stay behind me," Lorenzo commanded in a firm, steady baritone.
Sophia woke up, letting out a small, terrified cry as the red emergency lights flickered on along the baseboards of the suite. Elena scooped her five-year-old daughter into her arms, pressing the child’s face into her neck.
"Mommy! What's happening?" Sophia sobbed.
"Shh... baby, it's okay. Mr. Duca is going to keep us safe," Elena whispered, though her own heart was hammering wildly against her ribs.
Lorenzo kicked open the suite door and stepped out into the third-floor corridor.
The estate was echoing with shouts and the heavy boots of Marco’s security team taking defensive positions along the grand balcony. Down in the courtyard, heavy tactical vehicles were smashing through the wrought-iron gates, their bright headlights cutting through the heavy rain.
Marco ran up the marble stairs, his face covered in rain and sweat, holding an automatic rifle. "Boss! They’ve jammed our local frequencies! It’s a full strike team—Carmine’s private mercenaries! They aren't trying to capture anything, they’re here to wipe the house clean!"
"Where is Renata?" Lorenzo asked, his dark eyes burning with lethal intent.
"She unlocked the basement service entrance for them three minutes ago," Marco growled. "I caught her trying to slip through the kitchen. She’s locked in the holding cell downstairs."
Lorenzo looked at Marco, then down at Elena and Sophia. "Move them to the primary underground vault beneath the study. Marco, take point. I’ll cover the rear."
They moved fast down the grand staircase as gunfire echoed from the front gardens. Marco led the way through the darkened hallways, firing precise bursts through the smoke to clear the path, while Bruno charged ahead, barking fiercely to alert them to incoming threats.
They reached the heavy steel doors of the study's secret underground vault—a reinforced panic room built into the bedrock of the mansion, designed to withstand military-grade explosives.
Lorenzo entered his private biometric code into the digital keypad. The heavy steel door unlatched with a loud pneumatic hiss, swinging open to reveal a brightly lit, self-contained bunker stocked with emergency medical supplies, communications gear, and weapons.
Elena rushed inside, setting Sophia safely onto a leather sofa in the corner.
Lorenzo stepped into the vault doorway, looking at Elena. "Give me the pendant."
Elena reached around her neck, unhooked the silver chain, and handed the black-and-gold crest to Lorenzo.
Lorenzo took the pendant, turning it over in his hand. Near the top of the gold casing was a microscopic pinhole. Lorenzo pulled a small pocket blade from his suit trousers, pressing the point into the spring latch.

With a soft metallic click, the golden face of the pendant popped open.
Resting inside the hollow center was a tiny, high-density metallic micro-chip—preserved perfectly for fifteen long years.
