Chapter 1 - The Gold Clock in the Shadow

The late afternoon sun cast long, golden shafts of light across the manicured lawns of the Duca estate. Outside the grand mansion, the air was warm, smelling of trimmed hedges and blooming jasmine. Inside the east wing, however, the atmosphere was suffocating. Lorenzo Duca had spent the last two hours listening to his corrupt relatives argue over the family trust fund.
At thirty-nine, Lorenzo was a man born to rule. Tall, broad-shouldered, and sharply dressed in a perfectly tailored light-brown three-piece suit, he radiated a calm, lethal authority. His crisp white dress shirt was unbuttoned at the collar, revealing the rugged edge of his jawline and light stubble. A luxury gold watch glinted against his wrist as he stepped through the side doors of the mansion, needing a single moment of quiet before he lost his temper completely.
As Lorenzo crossed the stone garden path near the service entrance, a faint sound caught his attention. It wasn't the wind or the rustle of leaves. It was the delicate, heartbreaking sound of a child weeping.
Lorenzo stopped in his tracks, his dark eyes narrowing as he turned toward the narrow brick alleyway where the estate's trash bins were tucked against a high stone wall.
"Mommy, please don’t let them take you away," a tiny, trembling voice sobbed softly from behind the metal bins.
Lorenzo’s expression hardened instantly. He took slow, deliberate strides toward the shadows of the stone wall. Crouched between two heavy trash bins was four-year-old Emma. She was a tiny, fragile figure in a pale pink dress, white socks, and small white shoes. Long, soft light-brown hair framed her tear-streaked face, held back by a pale pink ribbon. In her small arms, she clutched a worn stuffed rabbit with one missing eye, holding it against her chest like a shield.
Before Lorenzo could utter a word, a massive black-and-tan shadow emerged from the surrounding bushes. Pino, Lorenzo’s muscular Doberman guard dog, stepped onto the brick path. The dog was normally an intimidating predator feared by every visitor on the grounds.
Yet, as Pino approached the crouched child, he did not growl. His ears lowered, his dark eyes softened, and he walked straight to Emma. The massive Doberman gently lowered his heavy body onto the pavement beside her, pressing his warm flank against her small leg like an invincible bodyguard.
Lorenzo stared, stunned by the sight. The dog that took three trained handlers to restrain was sitting softly beside a crying four-year-old girl.
Lorenzo slowly dropped to one knee, bringing himself down to Emma’s eye level. He kept his deep, gravelly voice controlled, suppressing the fury rising in his chest. Pino remained seated protectively beside her, his head resting near her knee.
"Who hurt you?" Lorenzo asked, his voice low, protective, and steady.

Emma’s lips trembled violently. She wiped a tear from her cheek with the back of her small hand, her wide, watery brown eyes looking up at the towering man in the light-brown suit.
"Renata said Mama stole your gold clock..." Emma sobbed softly, her voice shaking with innocent terror. "She hid it in Mama’s locker... she said you’d throw us out before sunset."
