Chapter 2 - The Foyer of Judgment

Lorenzo did not move for three full seconds. His jaw set like iron, his dark eyes burning with a cold, lethal clarity. He studied the little girl's terrified face, recognizing the absolute truth in her tears. Children did not invent stories about framed gold clocks and hidden lockers.
Emma clutched her battered stuffed rabbit tighter, her small shoulders shaking as if she expected the broad-shouldered billionaire to burst into anger.
Instead, Lorenzo slowly held out his right hand, palm facing upward.
Emma hesitated, looking from the gentle Doberman beside her to Lorenzo’s calm, unyielding eyes. She reached out her tiny hand and placed it into his broad palm.
Lorenzo lifted her gently into his broad arms, supporting her small weight effortlessly against his chest. Instinctively, Emma leaned her head against his shoulder, burying her face into his light-brown lapel. Pino rose to his feet immediately, falling into stride beside Lorenzo’s polished leather shoes like a trained royal guard.
Lorenzo carried the child back toward the grand marble steps of the mansion's main entrance. As they approached the double oak doors, Mrs. Harper stood in the entryway. Dressed in her black maid uniform with a white apron and black flats, Emma’s mother was pale, exhausted, and visibly trembling with panic. Another junior maid stood behind her, whispering nervously.
Mrs. Harper gasped, her hands flying to her mouth as she saw her tiny daughter carried in the arms of the most feared man in the city.
Emma lifted her head from Lorenzo’s shoulder, her crying stopped completely. She looked up at his sharp jawline and whispered softly into the quiet air.
"You smell like coffee," Emma whispered in a small, curious voice.
A faint, rare trace of a smile touched Lorenzo’s lips for a fraction of a second, before his eyes lifted toward the open foyer, turning back into pure ice.
Lorenzo stepped through the grand entrance hall carrying Emma in one arm, while Pino trotted beside them, his chest broad and alert.
Mrs. Harper rushed forward, her voice cracking with desperation. "Mr. Duca! I swear on my life, I didn't touch anything in your study! Please, don't harm my daughter!"
Before Lorenzo could speak, Renata—the senior housekeeper—stepped out from the adjoining corridor. Dressed in an immaculate dark housekeeping uniform, Renata held a silver keyring in her hand, her face wearing a polished, confident smirk.
That smirk vanished the second her eyes locked onto Emma cradled safely in Lorenzo’s arm, guarded by the massive Doberman.
The entire atmosphere of the grand foyer plummeted into liquid ice.
Lorenzo stopped in the center of the marble hall. He turned his head slowly, fixing Renata with a deadly, unwavering stare that made the senior housekeeper step back half a pace.
"Nobody leaves this house until I see that locker," Lorenzo commanded, his voice unnervingly calm and absolute.

Renata’s face dropped completely.
Emma buried her face back into Lorenzo’s neck, while Pino stepped two inches forward, his dark eyes locked onto Renata with low, rumbling hostility.
