Chapter 5 - The Shredded Testament

Lorenzo spent twenty minutes meticulously piecing together the paper fragments on his oak desk, using a clear acrylic strip to hold the text in place. Mrs. Harper watched from her chair in silence, while Emma sat peacefully on the sofa, humming a soft lullaby to her one-eyed stuffed rabbit.

As the final pieces of the document locked into place, Lorenzo’s chest rose and fell with heavy, controlled breaths.

The document was not a corporate ledger. It was a secondary codicil to the original 1994 Duca estate deed, signed by Lorenzo’s late father thirty years ago.

The text clearly stated that fifty percent of the commercial land foundation upon which the Duca shipping empire was built did not belong to Uncle Marco. It had been co-funded by a private partner named Thomas Harper.

Lorenzo froze. His dark eyes lifted from the paper, fixing directly onto Mrs. Harper.

"Harper..." Lorenzo murmured, his deep voice filled with sudden, profound realization. "Your late father was Thomas Harper?"

Mrs. Harper blinked in confusion. "Yes, sir. My father worked in civil engineering in Boston. He passed away when I was five years old. My mother always told me he had business with the Duca family, but after he died, we were left with nothing."

Lorenzo leaned back in his leather chair, the entire scope of the multi-decade conspiracy unraveling before his eyes.

Uncle Marco hadn't just tried to steal corporate voting shares today. Thirty years ago, Marco had suppressed Thomas Harper's co-ownership records, reducing Thomas's widow and daughter to poverty. And when Mrs. Harper took a maid position at the estate two years ago, Marco lived in constant fear that she would eventually discover her family's true heritage.

Renata was not acting alone. She was on Marco's payroll.

A soft knock sounded at the study door, breaking the heavy silence.

Frank, the chief security officer, stepped into the room, his face tense. "Mr. Duca, your uncle Marco and his son Julian have just entered the main hall. They are demanding to know why the senior housekeeper is being detained in the lower office."

Lorenzo stood up slowly to his full height, adjusting the cuffs of his light-brown three-piece suit.

"Tell them," Lorenzo growled softly, "that the master of this house is ready to see them."
