Chapter 9 - The Unraveling Covenant

By eleven-thirty at night, two state police cruisers arrived at the front entrance of the Duca estate, their red and blue lights flashing brightly against the wet marble steps.
Uncle Marco and Julian were escorted out of the grand hall in heavy steel handcuffs, charged with corporate fraud, evidence tampering, and grand larceny. Their political influence and corporate power crumbled in a single evening before the eyes of the entire executive board.
The executive board members unanimously voted to strip Marco and Julian of all corporate voting rights, transferring their frozen shares into a court-ordered receivership.
As the police vehicles drove down the long driveway into the dark storm, the grand mansion fell into a peaceful, quiet stillness.
The executive board members bowed their heads respectfully to Lorenzo before taking their leave, leaving Lorenzo, Mrs. Harper, and little Emma alone in the grand hall beneath the warm chandelier light.
Mrs. Harper stood near the fireplace, tears of deep relief streaming down her fair, rosy cheeks. She looked at the man who had protected her family when no one else would.
"Mr. Duca..." Mrs. Harper whispered, her voice trembling with emotion. "I don't know how to ever repay you for what you did tonight. You saved my life. You saved my daughter."
Lorenzo walked over to her, his tall, broad-shouldered frame radiating a profound warmth that wiped away every shadow of his terrifying reputation.
"You don't repay me, Mrs. Harper," Lorenzo said gently, his gravelly voice soft. "Your father was my father's partner. This house owes you thirty years of justice."
Emma walked over, her small white shoes clicking softly on the marble. She reached up, gently tugging the hem of Lorenzo’s light-brown suit jacket.
Lorenzo dropped to one knee before the four-year-old girl, looking into her sweet brown eyes.
"Yes, little one?" Lorenzo asked softly.
Emma held up her worn stuffed rabbit with one missing eye. "Bunny says thank you for being nice to Mommy."

Lorenzo let out a soft, genuine laugh—a sound so warm and rare that Mrs. Harper smiled through her tears. He reached out his broad hand, gently patting the top of Emma’s soft brown hair.
"You tell Bunny," Lorenzo whispered, "that nobody hurts this family ever again."
