Chapter 2

The hushed words hovered in the warm afternoon air, contrasting sharply with the grandeur of the surrounding courtyard. The crime lord remained seated for a brief, motionless moment, studying the tiny three-year-old girl standing before him. His piercing dark eyes scanned her face, looking for any sign of playfulness or childhood mischief, but he found only an intense, unvarnished seriousness that felt strangely out of place for a toddler.

Slowly, deliberately, the muscular boss lowered his tall frame, crouching down on the marble pavement until his broad-shouldered chest was level with Sophia’s small height. The fabric of his black luxury suit stretched across his broad shoulders, his silver wristwatch gleaming beneath the sunlight.

"Sophia..." he spoke, his voice deep, calm, and laced with a quiet, suspicious edge. "...where's your mama?"

Sophia looked up at his imposing face without a single trace of fear. She placed her tiny finger against her lips once more, letting out another soft "shh," before extending her small hand toward him. Her delicate fingers wrapped around two of his large, calloused fingers, tugging gently.

"Sleeping. Come... I show you something," Sophia replied in a soft, secretive, innocent voice.

She turned her golden head, glancing over her shoulder toward the soaring windows of the mansion as though ensuring no one was watching them from the upper galleries.

The crime lord glanced back toward the main entrance of the house. The estate was quiet; his security detail was stationed at the outer perimeter gates, and the domestic staff were occupied in the lower service wings. Curiosity, sharp and instinctual, stirred deep within his chest. He stood up slowly, allowing the tiny girl to guide him by his finger across the marble courtyard.

Sophia led him away from the polished stone terraces, stepping off the marble path onto a narrow, cobblestone walkway that wound through the estate’s extensive gardens. The grand facade of the mansion slowly receded behind a dense wall of tall, beautifully trimmed boxwood hedges and towering cedar trees.

The air grew cooler as they moved deeper into the older, neglected quadrant of the property—an area the boss rarely visited, where overgrown ivy clung to ancient stone structures that predated his father’s reign.

Sophia’s cream-colored Mary Jane shoes clicked softly against the mossy cobblestones as she pulled him toward an ancient, crumbling garden wall constructed from weathered gray granite. The wall was draped in thick wild vines and thorny rose bushes that had gone untrimmed for decades.

Sophia stopped beside a narrow, hidden cleft in the granite wall—an opening so small and shrouded by weeping willow branches that an adult would easily pass by without ever noticing its existence.

She turned her expressive blue eyes up to him, clutching her cream stuffed bunny tightly against her pale-blue floral dress. She pointed her small hand through the overgrown foliage toward a neglected clearing hidden beyond the wall.
