Chapter 3

The boss pushed aside a heavy curtain of weeping willow branches, his broad shoulders barely fitting through the narrow gap in the ancient granite wall. He stepped into a secluded, forgotten corner of the estate grounds—a quiet, sun-dappled clearing where the manicured perfection of the main gardens yielded to tall grass, wildflowers, and wild ivy.
Standing in the center of the clearing was an old, abandoned gardener's shed. Its wooden siding was weathered to a silver-gray patina, its shingled roof covered in green moss, and its small glass windows clouded with decades of grime and dust.
Sophia squeezed through the foliage beside him, her pale-blue floral dress brushing against the leaves. She didn't hesitate for a second; she marched straight toward the creaking wooden door of the shed, which hung slightly askew on rusted iron hinges.
"In here," Sophia whispered, turning her small, rosy face back to him before stepping over the weathered threshold.
The boss bent his tall, broad-shouldered frame, stepping carefully into the dim interior of the dusty building. Golden rays of natural daylight streamed through narrow cracks in the wooden wallboards, illuminating dancing dust motes in the air. The room smelled of dried herbs, old timber, damp earth, and forgotten time. Shelves along the walls held rusted hand tools, old iron shears, and dry clay pots.
Sophia walked straight toward the far corner of the shed, where a towering stack of broken clay flowerpots sat against the timber wall. She dropped to her knees on the dusty wooden floorboards, setting her cream stuffed bunny carefully on a clean patch of floor beside her.
With her tiny hands, she reached out and carefully began moving the fragments of broken clay pots aside, revealing a loose, rectangular wooden panel set flush into the lower wallboards.
Sophia pointed her small finger directly at the loose panel, her big blue eyes widening with childlike excitement and mystery.
"It's hidden behind there!" Sophia whispered urgently.
The boss crouched down beside her on the dusty floorboards, his black suit trousers resting against the wood. His dark eyes narrowed as he examined the loose panel. It was clearly deliberate—a secret compartment crafted to blend seamlessly with the surrounding wallboards.
He reached out his broad, calloused hand, his fingers prying the edge of the loose wooden board away from the wall. The panel slipped out easily, revealing a dark, hollow cavity hidden within the wall frame.

Reaching into the recess, his hand brushed against something smooth and firm. He pulled the object out into the streaming sunlight.
It was a small, heavily faded leather shoe box, covered in a thick layer of gray dust and bound by a yellowed piece of twine.
