Chapter 6 - The Poisoned Table

By eight o'clock the following morning, the storm had cleared, leaving a crisp, golden autumn sunrise over New York.

Inside the grand dining room of Caruso Manor, the long mahogany table was set once more. But this was no longer a routine business briefing.

Vincent Caruso sat at the head of the table, wearing his immaculate all-black suit, his wide-brimmed hat resting on the side table. Sitting directly to his right was Rachel Dawson, dressed in an elegant navy silk dress that Vincent had ordered for her, her dark-brown hair falling softly over her shoulders.

Sitting in the carved chair beside Rachel was six-year-old Emma, wearing a brand-new pink tweed dress with her cream bow, happily eating warm pancakes off a silver plate.

Seated along the sides of the table were eight senior captains and lieutenants of the Caruso organization, their faces filled with shock and quiet respect.

Marco stood near the door, flanked by four armed guards holding Richard Vale in heavy steel handcuffs at the end of the room.

Vincent raised his crystal glass, his deep baritone voice commanding total silence across the hall.

"Gentlemen," Vincent declared, his piercing blue eyes sweeping over his captains. "Thirty years ago, a lie was told inside this house. My sister Sofia did not die in a rival war. She was driven into hiding by traitors within our own ranks."

He reached out and placed his large hand over Rachel’s hand resting on the polished table.

"This is Rachel Dawson Caruso," Vincent announced proudly. "She is my sister's daughter, my lawful niece, and the true heiress to fifty percent of the Caruso foundation."

Gasps echoed across the dining room as the captains stood up from their chairs, bowing their heads in deep, genuine respect to Rachel and little Emma.

Richard Vale struggled against his cuffs, his face red with desperate fury. "This is a farce! You can't hand half the syndicate to a housemaid and a six-year-old child!"

Vincent slowly stood up from his chair, his towering frame radiating an absolute, terrifying power.

"She isn't a housemaid, Richard," Vincent said coldly. "She is a Caruso. And as of this morning, federal prosecutors have seized every offshore account you operated using stolen family funds."

Vincent gestured to two federal agents who stepped into the dining room from the main foyer.

"Richard Vale," the lead agent declared, stepping forward with arrest warrants. "You are under arrest for grand larceny, corporate fraud, and conspiracy."

As Richard was forcefully dragged out of the grand hall in handcuffs, his bitter shouts fading down the corridor, Emma looked up from her pancakes and pointed her small fork toward the door.

"He's going to the bad place now, right Uncle Vincent?" Emma asked innocently.

Vincent looked down at his grandniece, a warm, genuine laugh escaping his chest as he sat back down beside her. "Yes, Emma. He is."
