Chapter 8 - The Siege of Caruso Manor

Late that evening, as a quiet dusk settled over New York, a fleet of three black luxury sedans pulled up outside the main gates of Caruso Manor.
Inside the security room, Marco Russo monitored the perimeter screens. His sharp eyes narrowed as he recognized the emblem stamped on the lead vehicle's license plate—the official crest of the Commission, the governing council of the five New York families.
Marco picked up his encrypted radio. "Boss, we have company at the front gate. Don Carmine Moretti is requesting an audience."
Ten minutes later, the heavy oak doors of the grand reception hall opened.
Walking into the hall was Don Carmine Moretti—a seventy-year-old crime lord wearing an expensive charcoal coat, flanked by four broad-shouldered bodyguards.
Vincent Caruso stood at the center of the hall, wearing his all-black suit and his black wide-brimmed hat, radiating absolute, terrifying authority. Standing beside him was Marco, while Rachel and Emma watched safely from the second-floor gallery above.
"Carmine," Vincent said, his deep voice echoing through the vaulted hall. "To what do I owe the honor of an unannounced visit?"
Carmine stepped forward, resting his hands on his gold-headed cane. "Word has reached the Commission, Vincent. They say you surrendered half your empire to a former housemaid and a six-year-old child."
Vincent’s piercing blue eyes hardened into icy stone. He took two slow steps toward the older crime lord.
"She isn't a housemaid, Carmine," Vincent said softly. "She is my sister Sofia's daughter. My legitimate bloodline."
Carmine sneered slightly. "Bloodline or not, Vincent, the other families are nervous. They think you've grown soft in your old age. They think a child in this house makes the Caruso family vulnerable."
Before Vincent could answer, a small, confident footstep sounded from the grand staircase.
Six-year-old Emma walked down the marble steps alone, wearing her cream tweed outfit, her hands tucked neatly into her jacket pockets. She stopped right beside Vincent, looking up at the seventy-year-old crime lord with wide, fearless eyes.
"We aren't vulnerable," Emma said clearly, her young voice ringing through the silent hall. "Uncle Vincent is the strongest boss in New York. And if you try to hurt my mama, he will make you go away like Mr. Richard."
Carmine stared down at the six-year-old girl in sheer shock. The four bodyguards behind him looked at each other in utter disbelief.
Vincent looked down at his grandniece, a slow, fierce smile spreading across his bearded face. He reached out and placed his large, tattooed hand gently on Emma's shoulder.
"You heard the lady, Carmine," Vincent declared, his voice booming with terrifying power. "My bloodline stands unbroken. Tell the Commission that if anyone questions my family's strength, they are welcome to test it themselves."

Carmine stared at the formidable Mafia boss and the fearless child standing beside him. He realized in an instant that Vincent Caruso wasn't weaker—he was infinitely more dangerous now that he had a family to protect.
Carmine bowed his head slightly, a quiet mark of respect. "Message received, Vincent. The Caruso legacy remains untouchable."
