Chapter 1 - the scorched key

The grand laundry room in the west wing of the Moretti mansion was quiet, bathed in the soft golden hue of late afternoon light filtering through high arched windows. The scent of clean linen, warm steam, and lavender starch filled the air.
Alina Rossi knelt on the polished tile floor beside her three-year-old daughter, Mia. At twenty-nine, Alina moved with cautious, gentle grace despite the perpetual shadow of fear that lingered in her dark eyes. She wore a classic black housekeeping dress with a crisp white collar, a clean white apron, and practical black shoes. Her long dark-brown hair was tied back into a neat, practical bun. Her husband, Leo, had died four years ago in a horrific warehouse fire—a tragedy officially ruled an accident, yet forever entangled with the dark whispers surrounding the Moretti crime syndicate.
"Stay right here on the rug, sweetie," Alina whispered softly, smoothing the fabric of Mia’s pale pink floral dress. She adjusted the cream ribbon in Mia’s long brown curly hair and set down a box of wax crayons beside a worn cream stuffed rabbit. "Mommy has to finish folding the guest linens."
Mia held her stuffed rabbit tightly under one arm, her large, expressive eyes watching her mother intently. She wore white tights and small cream shoes. As Alina stood up, Mia noticed her mother looking nervously toward the hallway, her pale, rosy face tight with anxiety.
Two hours earlier than expected, the heavy front doors of the mansion echoed through the foyer with a deep, resonant thud.
Damon Moretti entered the estate. At forty-two, Damon was a feared Boston Mafia boss and the head of Moretti International Shipping—a man whose quietest instruction commanded absolute obedience. He was exceptionally tall, broad-shouldered, and ruggedly handsome, with long dark wavy hair falling around his shoulders, a thick groomed beard, and piercing blue eyes that held a cold, impenetrable calm. He wore an elegant black three-piece suit, an open-collar black dress shirt, a luxury wristwatch, and polished black leather shoes.
Walking half a step behind him was Dante Russo, forty-five, Damon’s trusted head of security. Built like an iron pillar in a fitted charcoal suit, black shirt, and discreet earpiece, Dante scanned the entry hall with sharp, disciplined eyes. Two armed security men followed behind them.
Upstairs near the gallery, Alina froze while holding a stack of folded white towels. Hearing Damon’s deep voice echo through the foyer hours before his scheduled return, her face went pale with worry.
Down in the service corridor, three-year-old Mia quietly wandered out of the laundry room, her small cream shoes clicking softly against the marble floor. She walked into the grand foyer, stopping right in the center of the hall as the towering Mafia boss approached.
Damon stopped dead in his tracks. His piercing blue eyes dropped down to lock onto the tiny child standing directly in his path.
Alina rushed out from the side stairwell, her heart hammering against her ribs, her dark eyes wide with terror as she saw her daughter standing before the feared crime lord. "Mia! No!"
Mia looked from Damon to her mother, then raised her small hand, pointing a finger straight at Damon’s chest.
"Why is my mommy scared of you?" Mia asked innocently, her clear voice echoing off the high marble walls.
Alina’s face went entirely void of color. She stopped ten feet away, clutching her white apron, unable to breathe. The security guards remained completely motionless.
Damon slowly lowered his towering frame, dropping onto one knee until his piercing blue eyes were level with the three-year-old child.
"I don't know," Damon said calmly, his deep baritone unusually gentle.
Mia hugged her cream stuffed rabbit tighter against her pink dress, peeking over her shoulder toward her trembling mother.
"My mommy cries whenever she sees pictures of a burned warehouse," Mia mentioned softly.
Damon’s stoic, guarded expression changed instantly. His dark eyebrows pulled together, a sudden, dangerous focus filling his gaze.
Mia reached into the small side pocket of her floral dress and pulled out an old, heavy metal key, darkened and pitted by fire. She had found it hidden inside her mother’s keepsake box earlier that morning.
Damon reached out and took the scorched key carefully into his large, tattooed hand. His sharp eyes immediately recognized the custom brass stamp on the key's head—it bore the official Moretti crest and the engraved number 4. It was the master key to Moretti Warehouse 4, the property destroyed in the fatal fire four years ago.
Behind Damon, Dante Russo’s disciplined posture fractured for a fraction of a second. His face hardened, an undeniable flash of alarm crossing his eyes.
Little Mia raised her arm and pointed her small finger directly at Dante.

"That man was in Mommy's fire picture," Mia whispered.
Damon slowly turned his head, his piercing blue gaze locking onto his head of security as the foyer plunged into an icy, suffocating silence.
