Chapter 2 - the shadow in the foyer

The heavy silence in the grand foyer was so dense that the gentle ticking of the grandfather clock sounded like falling hammer blows.

Damon stood up slowly from his knee, his tall frame uncurling until he towered over the marble hall. The scorched metal key remained held tightly between his fingers. His piercing blue eyes never left Dante Russo’s face.

"Dante," Damon spoke softly. His baritone voice was smooth, quiet, and carried a lethal weight that made the two security guards behind him instantly freeze. "Care to explain why a three-year-old child recognizes you from a picture of Warehouse Four?"

Dante took a subtle step back, his hands resting near his charcoal suit jacket. His disciplined expression recovered quickly, but a light sheen of sweat glistened along his temple.

"Boss," Dante said calmly, adjusting his earpiece. "I conducted the initial perimeter sweep of Warehouse Four four years ago after the fire department declared it safe. It’s entirely possible Mrs. Rossi saw press photographs from the investigation."

Alina rushed forward, pulling Mia into her arms. She held her daughter tightly against her black dress, her body trembling with terror. "Mr. Moretti, please! Mia doesn't know what she's saying! It was just an old newspaper clipping my late husband kept!"

Damon turned his head toward Alina, his sharp gaze taking in her pale, rosy cheeks and her terrified posture.

"Where is the photograph, Alina?" Damon asked gently.

Alina swallowed hard, tears welling in her dark eyes. "It's... it's in my room in the servants' wing, sir."

"Dante," Damon commanded without looking back. "Secure the perimeter. Nobody enters or leaves the estate grounds until I examine that file."

"Understood, Boss," Dante replied, bowing his head respectfully before stepping toward the front doors.

Damon took Alina’s arm into a firm, protective grip, guiding her and Mia toward his private study in the east wing. "Come with me, Alina."

The private study was a massive, mahogany-lined room filled with floor-to-ceiling bookshelves and heavy leather armchairs. A fire crackled softly in the stone hearth, casting warm orange light across the polished floor.

Damon sat behind his executive desk, setting the scorched metal key on the leather blotter. Alina sat in a plush armchair across from him, holding Mia on her lap. The three-year-old girl sat quietly, her small hand clutching her cream stuffed rabbit.

"Tell me about your husband, Alina," Damon requested, leaning back in his chair, his luxury watch catching the firelight.

"Leo was a logistics supervisor at Warehouse Four," Alina whispered, her voice cracking with emotion. "Four years ago, three days before the fire, he came home terrified. He told me he found a secondary set of manifest ledgers showing illegal weapons being funneled through the Moretti shipping docks."

Damon’s jaw tightened, a dark line forming between his brows. "I never authorized weapons shipments through Warehouse Four."

"I know, Mr. Moretti," Alina wept softly. "Leo said you didn't know about it. He said someone inside your executive board was operating a ghost network behind your back. But the night he went back to retrieve those ledgers... the warehouse exploded."

Damon stood up slowly, stepping around the desk to look down at the scorched key. "And the photograph Mia mentioned?"

Alina reached into her shoulder bag and pulled out an old, yellowed photograph. She handed it to Damon.

The picture showed the burning ruins of Warehouse Four. Standing in the dark alley behind the flames was Dante Russo, handing a thick black leather folder to a tall, silver-haired man in a dark coat.

Damon stared at the silver-haired man in the photograph, his gray-blue eyes turning into cold stone.

The man accepting the stolen ledgers from Dante was Silas Moretti—Damon’s own uncle and the senior chairman of the Moretti International Shipping board.
