Chapter 5 - the harbor box

The midnight rain over Boston Harbor fell in heavy sheets, blurring the glowing yellow lights of the industrial shipping docks.
A sleek black armored SUV pulled into the alley behind the Boston Harbor Depository—a historic stone building overlooking the dark waters of the Atlantic Ocean.
Damon stepped out of the vehicle, holding a large umbrella over Alina and Mia as they walked through the secure rear entrance.
Inside the quiet, underground vault room, lined with hundreds of shining brass safety deposit boxes, the night clerk bowed respectfully to Damon, leading them to Vault 14.
Damon pulled the scorched metal key from his pocket and inserted it into the heavy brass lock. He turned it clockwise until a deep metallic click echoed through the silent vault.
He pulled open the heavy box.
Inside rested a leather-bound journal, an encrypted USB drive, and an official sealed envelope bearing the emblem of the European Maritime Commission.
Alina reached out with trembling fingers, pulling her late husband's journal onto her lap. Tears spilled down her cheeks as she recognized Leo's handwriting.
"He kept everything, Damon," Alina whispered, flipping through the pages filled with dates, shipping manifest numbers, and offshore bank accounts. "Look at this..."
Damon picked up the sealed European envelope and opened the flap.
As his sharp eyes scanned the official legal documents inside, his breathing stopped for a fraction of a second.
The document was an official biological registry deed executed four years ago in Zurich.
And the named beneficiary of forty percent of the Moretti International European Trust was not Silas Moretti, nor was it Damon.
It was three-year-old Mia Rossi.
Damon stared at the document in utter shock, looking from the parchment to the little girl sitting on the bench, holding her cream stuffed rabbit.
"Alina..." Damon whispered, his baritone voice thick with disbelief. "Mia isn't Leo's biological daughter, is she?"
Alina froze. She looked down at the floor, fresh tears streaming down her pale face, her chest heaving with silent sobs.
"Leo found her four years ago, Damon," Alina revealed softly. "The night Warehouse Four burned down... Leo found a baby hidden inside an insulated, fireproof safe in the administrative office. He rescued her and brought her home to me three hours before the explosion."

Damon felt a sudden, electric shock run through his frame. "Whose baby was she, Alina?"
"She was your missing younger sister Clara’s daughter," Alina sobbed. "Clara was murdered by Silas four years ago... and Leo saved her baby."
