Chapter 1 - The Whispers on the Terrace

The grand ballroom of the Rienzi estate was a shimmering masterpiece of crystal chandeliers, cascading white orchids, and high-society opulence. Wealthy power brokers, politicians, and syndicate lieutenants mingled beneath vaulted ceilings, their laughter echoing over the soft rhythm of a live string quartet.

At the center of it all stood Alessandro Rienzi. At late thirty, the legendary mafia boss commanded the room without saying a single word. Broad-shouldered, muscular, and ruggedly handsome, he wore a perfectly tailored black suit, a crisp white dress shirt, a black tie, a luxury wristwatch, and his heavy family signet ring on his right hand. His light stubble framed an intense, frighteningly calm expression as his dark eyes scanned the crowd.

Beside him, greeting guests with effortless grace, was his fiancée, Genevieve Ashworth. The mid-30s blonde beauty dripped with elegance in a sparkling champagne-colored evening gown, diamond earrings, and a matching bracelet. She held a crystal champagne glass, offering radiant smiles to everyone who approached.

A soft tug at the hem of Alessandro’s trousers broke his concentration.

He looked down. Standing beside his polished leather shoes was three-year-old Amara, the maid’s tiny daughter. She wore an elegant pale-pink party dress with delicate floral details, her long light-brown hair held neatly by decorative clips. In her small arm, she clutched a worn stuffed lamb.

Amara pulled his sleeve a second time, her fair, rosy face unusually serious.

Alessandro immediately dropped to one knee, lowering his towering frame until he was eye-level with the little girl. Amara leaned in close, her tiny hand framing her mouth as she spoke directly into his ear.

"Please don’t trust that woman," Amara whispered softly, her sweet voice tight with genuine fear.

Alessandro’s dark eyes narrowed slightly. He slowly straightened his posture just enough to follow Amara’s small gaze across the crowded room. Standing near the soaring bay windows was Genevieve, her blonde hair catching the light as she raised her champagne glass to him, offering a warm, flawless smile.

Alessandro looked back down at the child. Amara clutched her stuffed lamb tighter against her chest, her small finger pointing directly toward Genevieve.

"Why did you say that?" Alessandro asked quietly, his deep voice calm and even.

Without answering in the loud room, Alessandro placed a broad, protective hand on Amara’s back and guided her through the tall french doors onto the quiet, moonlit terrace, stepping away from the music and guests. He crouched in front of her again, shielding her from the cool night breeze.

Amara glanced back nervously toward the glass doors before leaning in again.

"I heard her on the phone," Amara whispered, her wide eyes locked onto his. "She said when the wedding happens… everything changes."

Alessandro’s expression hardened, his light stubble catching the pale moonlight as his jaw set into steel.

Amara looked up at him and suddenly scrunched her face into a dramatic, angry scowl. A second later, her face transformed into an exaggerated, sweet smile.

"She was mad… then she saw me and smiled," Amara murmured softly, her small voice steady. "Fake."

Alessandro slowly stood up to his full height, his broad chest rising with a heavy, calculated breath. He turned toward the glass terrace doors, his piercing gaze locking onto Genevieve through the glass. Across the ballroom, Genevieve caught his eye and offered another perfectly warm, dazzling smile, raising her champagne glass in a silent toast.

Alessandro stared back at his fiancée without a single trace of a smile on his rugged face.

"What are you hiding from me?" Alessandro murmured under his breath, his voice laced with quiet suspicion.

Inside the ballroom, Genevieve’s brilliant smile slowly began to fade.
