Chapter 2 - The Shadows of the Estate

The music inside the ballroom continued, but the atmosphere on the moonlit terrace had transformed into cold, calculated tension.
Alessandro stood motionless by the stone balustrade, his dark eyes fixed on Genevieve as she turned away from the terrace doors to speak with a group of visiting investors. Every instinct that had kept him alive at the head of the Rienzi family was now fully awake.
A soft, anxious gasp came from the terrace entrance.
Fatima Okafor, Amara’s mother and a senior maid at the estate, hurried out into the night air. Dressed in her neat black-and-white maid uniform, her dark hair pulled back flawlessly, her fair, rosy cheeks were flushed with panic.
"Amara!" Fatima whispered, dropping to her knees beside her daughter. "Sweetheart, you shouldn't be troubling Mr. Rienzi!"
Fatima looked up at Alessandro, her hands trembling as she smoothed down Amara's pink floral dress. "Mr. Rienzi, I am so sorry. She slipped away while I was restocking the catering trays in the kitchen. She didn't mean to bother you."
Alessandro extended a broad hand, motioning for Fatima to relax. "She didn't bother me, Fatima. She was simply telling me a story."
Fatima’s eyes darted nervously toward the glass doors, sensing the cold shift in Alessandro’s posture. She held her daughter tightly against her apron, her maternal protective instincts flaring. "Amara has an active imagination, sir. She plays in the halls during the day—"
"Amara is observant," Alessandro interrupted softly, his voice gravelly and smooth. "And in this house, observation is a rare gift."
He looked down at the three-year-old girl, who was staring up at him with quiet trust, holding her stuffed lamb. Alessandro reached down, his large, calloused fingers gently touching the silver signet ring on his hand before looking back at Fatima.
"Keep Amara close to you tonight," Alessandro commanded quietly. "And if Genevieve approaches either of you, I want to know immediately."
Fatima’s breath hitched in her throat. She recognized the look in Alessandro’s eyes—it was the look of a predator who had just caught the scent of an enemy. She bowed her head respectfully. "Yes, Mr. Rienzi."
As Fatima led her daughter back toward the servant corridor, Alessandro pulled a sleek, encrypted phone from his inner suit jacket. He pressed a speed-dial button, placing the phone to his ear as he watched Genevieve take another sip of her champagne inside.
"Marcus," Alessandro spoke into the receiver, his voice dropping an octave into pure ice. "Run a full, deep-level audit on the Ashworth family's accounts in Zurich. Check every offshore transfer made in the last ninety days. And put a silent wire on Genevieve’s private cell."
On the other end of the line, his chief security lieutenant didn't hesitate. "Consider it done, Boss. Did something happen at the party?"
May you like
Alessandro took one last look at his beautiful, smiling fiancée through the glass.
"The wedding," Alessandro said coldly, "is no longer just a celebration. It's a trap."
