Chapter 5 - The Gift in the Nursery

The next morning, golden sunlight streamed through the high arched windows of the Rienzi estate nursery. The room was a bright, peaceful space filled with wooden toys, hand-painted murals, and soft velvet cushions.

Three-year-old Amara sat on a plush cream rug near the window, carefully arranging her wooden building blocks while her stuffed lamb sat beside her.

The white double doors of the nursery opened softly.

Genevieve stepped into the room. She wore a chic lavender silk dress, her blonde hair styled in soft waves, her diamond earrings sparkling in the morning sun. Her face wore an expression of sweet, maternal warmth as she carried a small, velvet-wrapped box in her hands.

Fatima, who was folding child linens near the wardrobe, froze the moment she saw Genevieve enter. She immediately set the towels down and stepped between Genevieve and her daughter.

"Miss Ashworth," Fatima said cautiously, her voice respectful but guarded. "Can I help you with something?"

Genevieve offered a sweet, beautiful smile, though her eyes remained cold as glass. "I brought a little gift for Amara, Fatima. I felt terribly about my harsh words last night after the carafe broke. I wanted to make amends."

Genevieve glided past Fatima, dropping gracefully to her knees beside little Amara on the rug. She set the velvet box in front of the child.

Amara stopped playing with her blocks. She looked at the velvet box, then looked up at Genevieve's face. Amara didn't reach for the present. She slowly pulled her stuffed lamb closer to her chest and shrank back toward her mother's knees.

"Go on, open it, sweetie," Genevieve cooed, her voice dripping with artificial warmth. "It’s a special bracelet. Just for you."

"Amara doesn't need expensive jewelry, Miss Ashworth," Fatima interjected gently, stepping closer. "Thank you, but—"

"I was speaking to the child, Fatima," Genevieve snapped, her head snapping toward the maid with sharp, icy authority before returning her sweet gaze to Amara. "Open it, little girl."

Before Amara could touch the box, a heavy boot stepped into the doorway of the nursery.

Alessandro stood in the entrance. He wore a fitted dark-grey suit, his black shirt unbuttoned at the collar, his broad frame casting a towering shadow across the sunlit floor.

"Is there a problem here?" Alessandro asked, his gravelly voice slicing through the tension in the room.

Genevieve’s demeanor instantly shifted. She stood up smoothly, her expression melting into pure, loving devotion as she looked at her fiancé. "Alessandro! Not at all, darling. I was just giving little Amara a small gift to make up for my mood last night."

Alessandro walked into the nursery, his dark eyes drifting from Genevieve to the unopened velvet box on the rug, then down to Amara, who was watching him with wide, serious eyes.

Alessandro dropped to one knee beside the three-year-old girl. He reached out, gently patting Amara’s light-brown hair before picking up the velvet box.

He popped the brass latch open.

Inside lay a delicate gold charm bracelet. But embedded near the clasp was a tiny, microscopic black glass bead—a localized audio tracking bug.

Alessandro’s jaw tightened. Genevieve wasn't just giving the child a gift—she was trying to plant a listening device on the maid’s daughter to monitor his private household conversations.

Alessandro closed the box with a quiet, sharp click. He stood up, looking Genevieve dead in the eye.

"Amara is too young for gold, Genevieve," Alessandro said softly, his voice devoid of all warmth. "And in this house, we don't give gifts with hidden weight."

Genevieve’s smile faltered for a fraction of a second, a cold shiver running down her spine as Alessandro pocketed the box.
