Chapter 1 - the falling crystal

The magnificent ballroom of the estate was a masterpiece of vivid, elegant lighting. Crystal chandeliers cast a warm, golden glow across the expansive marble floors, illuminating the towering columns and the champagne tables where wealthy guests mingled in their finest attire. At the very center of the room stood an enormous, glittering pyramid of empty crystal glasses, a breathtaking centerpiece that commanded the attention of everyone in the room.

Five-year-old Noah played cheerfully on the pristine marble a safe distance from the tower. He was an adorable boy with fair, rosy skin, soft chestnut curls, and huge blue eyes that reflected the sparkling lights above. Dressed in a perfectly tailored navy velvet tuxedo, he was completely safe, humming a happy tune as he rolled a small toy car across the floor.

Watching him closely from a few feet away was Elena. At twenty-eight, she possessed a striking, natural beauty with her fair skin, expressive brown eyes, and elegant brunette hair pinned into a flawless bun. She wore her uniform with pride—a crisp white shirt, a neat black vest, and a matching bow tie. She radiated a warm, protective energy, her eyes never leaving the little boy.

From across the room, she noticed a large security man with a shaved head, a muscular build, and a distinctive dark tattoo on his neck. He stepped too close to the centerpiece.

Behind Noah, the towering glass structure suddenly shuddered.

Clink.

Elena noticed immediately. The sound was tiny, but to her sharp instincts, it was deafening.

"Noah!" Elena shouted, her voice cutting through the classical music.

The glittering tower began tipping forward. Elena sprinted across the marble. She did not hesitate. Moving with incredible grace and speed, she reached the little boy, gently gathered him into her arms, and carried him safely away from the tower's path. She curled protectively around Noah several feet away, shielding him entirely.

Behind them, the empty glass pyramid collapsed across an unoccupied section of the marble floor. It created a spectacular, glittering cascade of shattered crystal, spreading like a wave of diamonds under the chandeliers. Absolutely no glass touched either of them.

Elena knelt on the floor, holding Noah securely. He was completely safe and physically unharmed, his blue eyes wide with surprise. Elena was also unharmed, breathing normally but emotionally shaken by how close it had been.

Pushing his way through the stunned crowd was thirty-nine-year-old Ethan, a handsome, self-made billionaire with a tall, muscular build, swept-back dark hair, and fair, rosy skin. Dressed in a sharp black tuxedo, he was an intimidating, commanding presence. From his distant angle in the crowded room, the collapse looked entirely different.

"Get away from my son!" Ethan yelled, his voice echoing with absolute authority as he rushed forward.

He approached quickly. Elena did not argue. She remained steady, stood up gracefully, and immediately handed Noah safely into his father's arms before stepping backward.

Ethan held Noah securely, his heart pounding against his chest. He glared at Elena, ready to demand an explanation, but before he could speak, Noah urgently pointed his little finger toward the young woman.

"Dad! She saved me!" Noah said clearly.

Ethan froze. The protective anger in his eyes melted instantly into profound shock and a heavy wave of guilt. He looked at Elena, realizing she had moved his son out of harm's way.

Then, Noah pointed his tiny finger across the vast ballroom. "That man pushed it."

Ethan followed his son's finger. Pushing through the whispering guests, the large security man with the shaved head and tattooed neck was quietly backing toward the grand exit doors.

On the clear marble floor, safely away from the fallen glass, Elena noticed something glittering. She stepped over and picked it up. It was a heavy gold cufflink, intricately engraved with Ethan’s family crest. She turned it over in her palm. Engraved onto the polished back of the gold was a tiny, perfect photograph of Ethan.

"He wasn't after Noah," Elena said, her voice soft but carrying a chilling certainty.

Ethan’s expression changed completely. The realization settled over his features like ice.

The security man turned and quickly headed toward the exit.

Ethan gave Noah safely back to Elena, trusting her completely. Before the tattooed man could reach the grand doors, two of Ethan's loyal bodyguards calmly stepped in front of the exit, blocking his path entirely.

Ethan slowly removed his black tuxedo jacket, handing it to a nearby waiter. He stared at the man from across the room.

"You missed," Ethan said, his voice ice-cold and unyielding.

The tattooed man stopped dead in his tracks and slowly turned toward Ethan, a tense silence blanketing the entire ballroom.
