Chapter 5 - the unexpected visitor

the afternoon passed peacefully in the mansion. the sunlight streamed through the tall windows, casting long, elegant shadows across the luxurious cream-paneled walls. elena kept noah engaged with books and educational games, ensuring he remained happy and completely shielded from the outside world.

around three o'clock, the internal intercom on the wall chimed softly. elena pressed the receiver.

"miss elena," the voice of the head butler sounded through the speaker. "there is a visitor at the front gate requesting access. she claims it is urgent."

elena frowned. "mr. carter left strict instructions that no one is to be admitted."

"i am aware, miss," the butler replied. "but the visitor is vivian carter. mr. ethan's stepmother."

elena’s heart skipped a beat. ethan had mentioned vivian briefly in the past—a sophisticated, wealthy woman who had married his father late in life and had always maintained a distant, cold relationship with ethan.

"tell her mr. carter is out of town," elena instructed calmly. "she will have to return tomorrow."

there was a brief pause on the intercom. "she says she knows he is away, miss. she says she has come specifically to see her grandson."

elena looked over at noah, who was safely sitting on the sofa, looking at a picture book. her protective instincts flared. "deny her entry. the gates are to remain locked."

before the butler could respond, a sophisticated, authoritative female voice cut through the intercom. vivian had clearly walked into the security office at the gate.

"listen to me, young woman," vivian's voice was crisp and cold, carrying a distinct aristocratic American accent. "i am this child's grandmother. i do not need the permission of a glorified nanny to visit my own family. open these gates immediately, or i will call my lawyers and have you removed by the police."

elena remained perfectly composed. her breathing was natural, her expression calm but unyielding. "mrs. carter, with all due respect, my employer has given me explicit legal authority over this estate in his absence. if you attempt to force entry, it is you who will be dealing with the police. good day."

elena terminated the intercom connection. she walked over to the window, looking out toward the distant front gates. a sleek, black luxury town car was idling on the driveway. standing beside it was an elegant woman in a tailored emerald suit, her blonde hair perfectly coiffed. even from a distance, elena could see the fury radiating from her posture.

vivian stared up at the mansion for a long moment, then abruptly turned, got back into the car, and the vehicle drove away.

elena let out a quiet breath, turning back to noah. "alright, sweetie, how about a snack?"

"yay! apples and peanut butter!" noah cheered.

as elena prepared the snack in the suite's private kitchenette, her mind raced. vivian's sudden appearance couldn't be a coincidence. she had known ethan was out of town. she had specifically tried to bypass his authority to get to noah.

elena walked back into the sitting room and handed noah his plate. she then picked up the secure house phone and dialed ethan's encrypted line. it rang three times before he answered.

"elena, is everything alright?" ethan's voice was sharp with immediate concern.

"noah is perfectly safe, mr. carter," elena reassured him quickly. "but vivian came to the gate. she demanded to see noah. i refused her entry and she left."

there was a heavy silence on the line. when ethan finally spoke, his voice was filled with a chilling realization.

"vivian hasn't visited this house in three years," ethan said slowly. "she hates children. she only ever comes around when she wants money."

"she knew you were gone," elena added quietly.

"she is involved," ethan concluded, his voice tight. "i am standing in the massachusetts archive right now, elena. i just found my father's private ledger. vivian wasn't just my stepmother. thirty years ago, before she married my father... she was engaged to julian."
