Chapter 4 - the silent archive

the following morning, the mansion was bathed in bright, natural daylight. the shattered glass in the ballroom had been immaculately cleared, leaving the marble floors gleaming as if nothing had happened. the atmosphere, however, remained quietly tense.
elena had moved her belongings into a beautiful, spacious suite directly adjoining noah's nursery. she wore a tailored navy blazer over a white blouse and dark trousers, stepping into her new role with elegant professionalism.
noah was sitting happily on the plush rug of his playroom, building a magnificent tower out of brightly colored wooden blocks. he was completely safe, his rosy cheeks glowing with health, entirely unaware of the dark currents swirling around his father's empire.
ethan walked into the playroom, dressed in a sharp charcoal suit. he watched his son for a moment, a look of profound love and protectiveness washing over his handsome face. he then turned to elena, signaling her to step into the adjacent sitting room.
"i spent the night reviewing the security footage," ethan said, keeping his voice low so as not to disturb noah. "the man used a forged invitation, but the biometric scanners at the gate should have flagged him. someone overrode the system from the inside."
elena’s eyes widened slightly. "you have a mole."
"exactly," ethan nodded. "and until i find out who it is, we have to operate as if everything is perfectly normal. we cannot alert whoever is watching that we know the system is compromised."
elena thought for a moment. "what about the cufflink? did you find anything else on it?"
ethan reached into his pocket and placed the gold cufflink on the small glass table between them. "i examined it under a microscope. the engraving of my face on the back isn't just a photograph. it's a micro-laser etching. it's a map."
"a map?" elena leaned in, looking closely at the tiny gold surface.
"it maps the layout of the old carter estate in massachusetts," ethan explained. "the estate my father abandoned thirty years ago. there is a specific room highlighted on the etching. the central archive."
elena looked up at him. "you think there is something in that archive that proves who is behind this?"
"i am certain of it," ethan replied, his blue eyes determined. "my father kept meticulous records. if julian was involved in something dangerous enough to fake his own death, the clues will be in those files."
ethan paused, looking toward the open door of the playroom where noah was happily playing. "i need to go to massachusetts today. i need to access that archive before whoever sent that messenger realizes i found the map."
"it's too dangerous to go alone," elena said firmly. "if they are watching you, they will follow you."
"i know," ethan said. "which is why i'm taking the private jet, and i'm taking my two most trusted security men. but i cannot take noah. it's not safe."
ethan looked directly into elena's eyes. "i am leaving him here with you. you have full authority over the household staff until i return. if anyone tries to enter this wing, lock it down and call the authorities."
"you have my word, mr. carter," elena said, her voice steady and warm. "he will be safe."
ethan offered a small, grateful smile. "thank you, elena. i will be back by tomorrow evening."
as ethan turned to leave, noah ran out of the playroom, holding up a completed wooden tower. "look, dad! i built a castle!"
ethan knelt down, his dark hair falling slightly over his forehead. he gave his son a gentle hug, careful not to mess up his clothes. "it's a beautiful castle, noah. be a good boy for elena today, okay?"
May you like
"i will!" noah beamed brightly.
ethan stood up, giving elena one last look of absolute trust before walking out of the suite. elena closed the heavy door, engaging the secure locks, ready to protect the little boy with her life.
