Chapter 7 - the silent corridor

elena moved with absolute precision. she did not panic. she calmly walked over to the heavy oak doors of the nursery suite and engaged the secondary, manual deadbolts—thick steel bars that could not be overridden by any electronic hack.

she turned back to noah, her expression warm and entirely relaxed. "noah, sweetie, we are going to play a new game. it's called 'the quiet mouse'."

noah's blue eyes lit up with excitement. "i love games! how do we play?"

"we have to go into the big closet in my room," elena explained softly, offering her hand. "and we have to build a soft fort out of pillows. the rules are we have to be as quiet as little mice, and we can't come out until daddy gets home. if you win, you get an extra dessert tonight."

noah eagerly grabbed her hand. "i'm going to win!"

elena led him into her adjoining suite, opening the doors to the massive, walk-in wardrobe. it was a highly secure, windowless room located in the very center of the floorplan. she quickly arranged plush floor cushions and blankets, creating a cozy, safe space for the child.

"sit right here, my brave little mouse," elena smiled, handing him a tablet loaded with his favorite silent puzzles. "remember, absolute quiet."

noah nodded solemnly, sitting cross-legged and immediately engaging with the game.

elena closed the wardrobe doors, leaving them cracked just a fraction of an inch so she could hear the outer room. she stood silently in the bedroom, her heart beating a steady, controlled rhythm. she did not seek a weapon. she sought information.

she pressed the silent emergency panic button concealed beneath the nightstand. it sent a direct, untraceable signal to the local police department and to ethan's private security detail traveling with him.

ten minutes passed in heavy, suffocating silence.

then, the faint sound of the outer suite door handle rattling echoed through the quiet room. someone was trying the electronic lock. it beeped, indicating a successful keycard swipe, but the heavy oak door remained firmly shut, held by the manual steel deadbolts elena had engaged.

a muffled voice cursed softly in the hallway.

elena stepped closer to the bedroom door, keeping her breathing natural and slow. she recognized the voice. it was the tattooed man from the ballroom.

"the manual locks are thrown," the man's voice came through the thick wood, muffled but distinct. "the maid is smarter than she looks."

"blow the hinges," a second voice whispered. this one was female, cold, and aristocratic. vivian.

"we can't," the tattooed man replied. "if we use explosives, the police response will be immediate. you paid me for a quiet extraction, vivian. the boy is the only leverage you have to make ethan burn those ledgers."

"then find another way in!" vivian hissed. "there must be a maintenance vent. i will not lose this empire because of a glorified nanny!"

elena stood perfectly still, absorbing the information. vivian was desperate. she knew ethan had found the ledgers in massachusetts. she was trying to take noah as a hostage to force ethan to destroy the evidence.

the sound of footsteps moved away from the door, heading toward the end of the hallway where the central HVAC maintenance access was located.

elena knew the ventilation shafts were too small for a grown man, but they could drop a sedative gas to force her out. she had to keep the air pure.

she quickly grabbed a thick bath towel from the adjoining bathroom, soaked it in water, and pressed it firmly against the gap at the bottom of the bedroom door, sealing the room.

she was holding the line. and she knew ethan was coming.
