Chapter 3 - the eastern parlor

the east parlor was an elegant, minimalist room designed for private meetings, featuring pale cream walls and dark leather armchairs. the tattooed man sat comfortably in one of the chairs, completely unrestrained, radiating a strange, terrifying confidence.
ethan entered the room, exuding a powerful, calm authority. elena followed a few paces behind, having insisted on joining to ensure noah's safety was fully addressed. ethan had agreed, recognizing her sharp observational skills.
the man looked up as they entered, his shaved head gleaming faintly under the recessed lighting. his eyes flicked to elena, then settled firmly on ethan.
"you have a very fast maid, mr. carter," the man said, his American accent laced with a subtle, mocking drawl. "it's a good thing. glass is so unpredictable."
"you deliberately pushed the centerpiece to create a distraction," ethan said, his voice low and steady as he stood near the doorway. "you wanted me to find the cufflink. you wanted my attention. you have it. speak."
the man smiled, a cold expression that didn't reach his eyes. "i'm just a delivery service, ethan. the cufflink was a token of goodwill. a reminder that the past doesn't simply vanish because you bury an empty casket."
elena watched the man's micro-expressions. he was relaxed, his breathing even. he wasn't afraid of ethan's power or his wealth. he was backed by someone who believed they held all the cards.
"julian is dead," ethan stated flatly. "i identified the wreckage myself."
"you identified a burned car," the man corrected smoothly. "you identified a watch. you identified a convenient narrative that allowed you to take sole control of the carter empire. but we both know julian was always the smarter brother."
ethan's muscular frame remained perfectly still, but the air around him grew icy. "if my brother is alive, why is he sending a messenger to terrorize my home? why target a display near my son?"
"to prove a point," the man replied, leaning back in the chair. "he could have taken everything from you tonight. your son, your life, your empire. but he chose to break a few glasses instead. consider it a professional courtesy."
elena stepped forward slightly, her dark vest contrasting with her crisp white shirt. "a professional courtesy doesn't involve putting a five-year-old child in proximity to falling glass. whoever sent you is a coward."
the man's eyes snapped to elena, his smirk faltering for a fraction of a second. "you should teach your staff to stay quiet, ethan."
"she speaks with my full authority," ethan countered instantly, moving slightly to shield elena from the man's gaze. "and she is right. if julian wants to talk, he can walk through my front door. playing games in the shadows only proves he lacks the courage to face me."
the tattooed man stood up slowly, smoothing the front of his jacket. "he isn't ready to meet you face to face. not yet. but he wants you to know that the empire you built on his supposed grave belongs to him. he expects you to begin transferring the european assets by the end of the week. if you refuse, the next display won't be made of glass."
ethan didn't flinch. he simply opened the parlor door. "you can tell whoever hired you that i do not negotiate with ghosts. and if you or anyone else steps onto my property again, you will be handed over to the federal authorities for criminal trespassing and extortion."
the man chuckled softly, walking toward the exit. "we'll see about that."
as the man walked past them and was escorted out of the mansion by the bodyguards, ethan closed the door, running a hand through his swept-back dark hair.
elena looked at him, noticing the profound exhaustion hiding beneath his commanding exterior. "mr. carter... do you really believe your brother is alive?"
"i don't know," ethan admitted quietly, looking down at the marble floor. "but whoever orchestrated this knows things only julian would know. they know about the custom cufflinks. they know the exact vulnerabilities in our security grid."
ethan looked up, his blue eyes meeting hers. "i need to protect noah. the security team is compromised if they let that man in. i need someone i can trust completely."

elena met his gaze, her warm, brown eyes filled with unwavering resolve. "noah is safe with me, mr. carter. i will not let anyone harm him."
"i know you won't, elena," ethan said softly. "which is why, starting tomorrow, you are no longer a maid. you are noah's personal guardian."
