Chapter 1 - The Gates of Broken Stones

The morning rain had washed over the winding stone driveway of the Valenti estate, leaving the dark cobblestones gleaming like wet slate beneath the pale autumn sky. Looming behind the driveway were the towering wrought-iron and gold gates, imposing and cold, guarding a sanctuary of immense wealth and dark secrets. Stepping out onto the damp stone, Vincent stood like a statue in his tailored beige suit. His unbuttoned white dress shirt collar was slightly damp, his dark wavy hair clinging to his temples, and his light stubble catching the pale daylight. Normally a man of absolute authority, his fair rosy skin was visibly pale, his hands trembling slightly despite the luxury watch gleaming on his wrist.

In front of him stood three figures who looked as if they had walked out of a nightmare. His two missing nephews, Luca and Nico, stood barefoot on the cold stone driveway. Their clothes—an olive green hoodie and a dark jacket over dirty shirts—were caked in dried mud and stained with grease. Standing between them was a six-year-old girl with messy long brown hair and fair, rosy skin. She wore a filthy floral dress under a worn pink jacket, clutching a torn stuffed rabbit with white-knuckled intensity. The two boys leaned in close to her, their small frames tense, hovering over her like miniature bodyguards.

Vincent dropped to one knee, ignoring the cold moisture soaking into the knee of his expensive beige trousers. He looked at his nephews with a mixture of overwhelming relief and intense, demanding confusion.

"Who took you?" Vincent asked, his voice low, raspy, and cutting through the quiet hum of the rain.

Luca, the older of the two boys, squared his shoulders and stared straight back into his uncle’s dark eyes without flinching. "Nobody took us."

Vincent’s brow furrowed, his mind racing through every terrifying possibility that had kept him awake for forty-eight hours. Before he could speak again, the mysterious little girl took a tiny, hesitant step forward. She kept one hand wrapped tightly around her stuffed rabbit, while her other small, dirt-caked hand reached deep into the pocket of her pink jacket.

She pulled out a tarnished silver pocket watch, its chain dangling between her tiny fingers.

Vincent’s heart stopped. His eyes widened as he carefully reached out and took the watch from her palm. The weight of the metal felt ice-cold in his hand. He flipped the casing open with his thumb. Inside, engraved across the polished silver inner lid, was a family motto and the initials M.V. It was the heirloom belonging to his younger brother, Michael—a watch that had supposedly been burned to ash in the wreckage of a tragic car accident six months ago.

"He gave it to me..." the little girl whispered, her rosy lips trembling. "...Michael."

Vincent’s face drained of all color. He looked down into her wide, innocent eyes, feeling a chill run straight down his spine. "Where is he?" Vincent breathed, his voice barely audible.

The little girl leaned closer to Vincent’s ear, her small breath warm against his skin as she whispered a secret promise that made Vincent freeze in absolute shock. "He said to give you this when the woman in black comes back to finish the job."

Before Vincent could process the words, the heavy crunch of tires on stone echoed from down the driveway. A sleek black SUV pulled up behind them, its engine idling with a low, menacing thud. At the sight of the vehicle, the little girl’s face went chalk-white with fear, and she shrank back into Nico’s arms.

The rear door of the SUV swung open. Elena stepped out into the damp air, draped in an elegant all-black designer outfit with a structured coat and a black handbag slung over her arm. Her long wavy blonde hair caught the wind, framing a fair, rosy face pale with panic and guilt. Instead of rushing forward to embrace her missing sons, she froze completely in the blurred background, her eyes locking onto the little girl standing beside Vincent.

"You weren’t supposed to find us," Elena whispered, her panicked voice trembling violently across the stone driveway.

Vincent slowly began to stand up, his broad frame towering over the driveway as his expression hardened into cold, lethal realization. He stared at his sister, his dark eyes narrowing into razor-sharp focus.

Luca reached out, grabbing Vincent’s beige suit sleeve with desperate strength, tears welling in his young eyes. Beside him, Nico fiercely grabbed the little girl's arm, keeping her pinned behind his back. In the background, Elena slowly began backing away toward the open door of the black SUV.

"Uncle Vincent, don't let Mom leave..." Luca cried out, his voice cracking with raw emotion. "She knew where we were the whole time."

Vincent looked down at his nephew, then turned his gaze back to the silver pocket watch resting in his palm. He turned the watch over in his hand, his thumb catching a hidden latch near the stem. The back casing popped open, revealing a tiny micro-digital screen embedded beneath the mechanical gears. A small red light was pulsing steadily, displaying a live tracking coordinate timestamp synced to yesterday's date—six months after Michael's official funeral.
