Chapter 5 - The Subterranean Signal

Vincent stared at his brother’s fresh signature under the beam of his flashlight, the rain dripping from the brim of his coat onto the scorched concrete foundation of the lodge. The ink was barely dry. Michael wasn't dead. He had been alive three days ago, sitting in this very room, signing legal documents alongside the man who was currently trying to destroy the family.
Vincent grabbed the metal canister and the journals, returned to his armored sedan, and sped back toward the Valenti estate as the first light of dawn broke through the gray clouds over the mountains.
By seven in the morning, Vincent was back inside the estate's subterranean security bunker beneath the wine cellar. The room was built from ten-inch reinforced concrete, equipped with independent air filtration, private communications arrays, and comfortable living quarters.
Luca and Nico were fast asleep on a cot, wrapped in warm blankets, while Lily sat quietly at a small steel table, drawing pictures on a pad of paper with colored pencils. Elena sat in the corner, staring at the floor in exhausted silence.
Vincent set the scorched metal canister down on the central table. He pulled out his tactical knife and pried the sealed lid open.
Inside sat a high-frequency satellite transponder unit powered by a military-grade lithium battery. The device was connected to an encrypted hard drive with a glowing blue digital display.
"What is that?" Marcus asked, stepping up beside Vincent with his sidearm re-holstered.
"It's the receiver for Michael's watch," Vincent replied.
He pulled the silver pocket watch from his pocket, setting it directly beside the transponder unit. The moment the two devices came within six inches of each other, the red light on the watch stopped pulsing and turned a solid, brilliant green.
A low, mechanical chime sounded from the hard drive, and the wall-mounted monitor in the bunker flickered to life.
A live video transmission appeared on the screen.
The camera feed was grainy, displaying a dimly lit, high-tech medical laboratory constructed from black-and-gold concrete walls. Sitting in a leather chair in the center of the room, surrounded by heart monitors and IV drip stands, was a man wearing a dark tailored suit.
His hair was dark and wavy, his face rugged with light stubble, his fair rosy skin pale beneath the harsh fluorescent lights.
It was Michael Valenti.
Vincent stepped up to the screen, his breath catching in his throat. "Michael..."
The recorded video began to play. Michael looked directly into the camera lens, his icy eyes calm, tired, and fiercely resolute.
"Vincent," Michael's voice echoed through the concrete bunker, deep and raspy. "If you are seeing this feed, it means Arthur Vance has launched his final phase to seize control of the Valenti corporate holdings. You need to know the truth about six months ago. My car accident wasn't staged by me to run away. It was staged by Arthur Vance to lock me inside the sub-floor facility beneath the estate."
Vincent’s eyes widened in shock. "Beneath the estate?"
"Yes, brother," Michael continued on the video. "The lab where they synthesized the toxin wasn't in Chicago. It is sitting directly beneath your feet, built into the old foundations below the grand ballroom. Lily is my daughter, born in secret. She carries the natural immune enzyme because her mother was the chief geneticist who created the compound. Vance kidnapped Lily to force me to transfer my master keys to the board."
Michael took a ragged breath on the video, looking down at his hand, which was trembling slightly.
"Elena didn't betray you out of greed, Vincent. Vance infected Luca and Nico with a slow-acting variant of the same toxin to keep her obedient. She brought the children to the gates because I managed to leak the silver watch out of the sub-floor through a servant three days ago. The watch isn't a tracking device for Vance... it's the remote detonation trigger for the laboratory vault."
The video feed flickered violently, static cutting across Michael's face as the recording reached its final ten seconds.

"Find the glass floor in the ballroom, Vincent. Open the vault before Vance liquidates the facility. And protect my daughter."
The screen went black.
