Chapter 2 - The Silence in the Study

The grand mahogany doors of the Valenti estate study slammed shut with a heavy, resonant thud, sealing out the damp autumn wind. The interior of the private study was warm, illuminated by amber lamplight reflecting off dark wood paneling and floor-to-ceiling bookshelves. A massive oak desk sat at the center of the room, surrounded by plush leather armchairs.
Vincent stood by the high glass windows overlooking the estate grounds, his beige suit jacket discarded over the back of his chair, his white shirt sleeves rolled up to his forearms. He watched as his private medical team finished examining the three children on the velvet sofa. Luca and Nico sat quietly, wrapped in warm fleece blankets, hungrily eating sandwiches while keeping their eyes fixed on the little girl sitting between them. She sat motionless, holding her stuffed rabbit close to her chest, her fair rosy skin now cleaned of dirt, though her eyes remained wide with silent vigilance.
"They are suffering from mild exposure and dehydration, Mr. Valenti," the lead doctor whispered, stepping up to Vincent. "No fractured bones or serious injuries. But the girl... she has surgical scar tissue along her upper spine. Fresh scar tissue, less than eight weeks old."
Vincent’s jaw tightened into iron. "Surgical scars from what?"
"A bone marrow extraction procedure," the doctor replied softly before gathering his equipment and exiting the room with the medical staff.
Vincent turned around slowly, his gaze falling onto Elena. She sat in a leather armchair in the corner of the room, her elegant black coat draped over her shoulders, her long blonde hair disheveled as she clutched her handbag like a shield. Her fair skin was pale, her breath coming in shallow, anxious gasps.
"Speak, Elena," Vincent commanded, his voice quiet, flat, and sharp enough to slice glass. "Before I have security lock you in the holding cells beneath the garage."
Elena looked up, tears brimming in her eyes. "Vincent... you don't understand what happened. I didn't kidnap my own children! I was trying to hide them! Three days ago, a team of armed men showed up at the beach house. They didn't want money. They wanted the girl. They threatened to kill Luca and Nico if I didn't lead them to Michael's private vault!"
"And you took my nephews to an abandoned cabin in the woods?" Vincent asked, stepping closer to her chair, his broad frame casting a long shadow across the rug. "You left them barefoot, starving, and filthy while you drove around in a fifty-thousand-dollar SUV?"
"I was following instructions!" Elena sobbed, covering her face with her hands. "Michael left me a phone before he died! He told me if anyone came for the girl, I had to take her to the estate gates and wait for his signal!"
"Michael is dead, Elena!" Vincent shouted, his dark eyes blazing with controlled rage. "We buried him six months ago!"
"Then explain how his watch is still transmitting!" Elena cried out, looking up with raw desperation.
Vincent reached into his trouser pocket and pulled out the silver pocket watch. The tiny micro-digital screen on the back was still pulsing with its red light. He walked over to his grand oak desk, opened a drawer, and pulled out an encrypted security interface cable, plugging the watch directly into his private computer terminal.
The dual monitors on his desk flickered to life, scrolling through lines of encrypted code. Vincent’s chief security officer, Marcus, stepped up beside him, tapping the screen to analyze the estate's internal security logs from earlier that morning.
"Boss," Marcus whispered, his face turning pale as he reviewed the data. "Look at the perimeter log from three hours ago."
Vincent leaned over the desk, his eyes scanning the digital timestamps. At precisely 4:15 AM, three hours before the children appeared outside the gates, the mansion's outer security perimeter had been manually disarmed for twenty minutes.
"Who disarmed it?" Vincent asked coldly.

Marcus tapped the biometric login log. "The security bypass wasn't authorized from the outside, Boss. It was entered right here in this study using your private master encryption key."
Vincent froze, looking slowly from the computer screen back to the three children sitting on the sofa. He had not left his room all night. The master encryption key existed in only two places—on a flash drive locked inside his personal wall safe, and inside the memory chip of his dead brother's silver pocket watch.
