Chapter 9 - The Siege at the Gates

By ten o'clock in the morning, the rain had finally stopped, leaving behind a crisp, sunlit sky over the Valenti estate.

Federal law enforcement vehicles and medical transports sat parked along the stone driveway outside the ornate wrought-iron and gold gates. The corrupt board members were escorted out of the mansion in handcuffs, their legal empire dismantled in a single morning.

Inside the grand ballroom, the hydraulic floor panel remained open. A steel spiral staircase had been elevated from the subterranean vault, allowing Michael Valenti to ascend into the warm sunlight of the main hall.

Michael walked slowly, leaning slightly on a cane, his dark wavy hair damp, but his fair rosy skin returning to its natural color. He wore a clean dark coat provided by the medical staff.

Standing near the entrance of the ballroom were Elena, Luca, Nico, and little Lily.

The moment Lily saw her father emerge from the stairwell, her face lit up with radiant joy. "Daddy!" she cried out.

She dropped her stuffed rabbit onto the floor and sprinted across the polished oak floorboards as fast as her small feet could carry her.

Michael dropped his cane, falling to his knees as he opened his broad arms. He caught his daughter, lifting her effortlessly into his lap and pulling her flush against his chest, burying his face in her brown hair as tears rolled down his cheeks.

"I've got you, baby," Michael sobbed softly, his deep voice cracking with raw emotion. "I've got you. You're safe."

Luca and Nico ran forward as well, throwing their arms around their uncle and sister, the three children laughing and crying together in the bright morning light.

Elena walked up slowly, standing beside Vincent as they watched the family reunite. She looked at Vincent, her fair rosy cheeks wet with tears of profound gratitude.

"Thank you, Vincent," Elena whispered, her voice trembling. "For saving my boys. For saving all of us."

Vincent looked down at his sister, his expression softening as he placed a large, protective hand on her shoulder. "This family stays together, Elena. Nobody gets left behind again."

Vincent walked over to where Michael was sitting on the floor with the children. He reached down into his coat pocket, pulled out Lily's stuffed rabbit that he had kept safe, and set it gently beside his brother.

Michael looked up at Vincent, his dark eyes shining with undeniable respect and brotherhood. He reached out his hand, grasping Vincent's forearm tightly.

"You kept the promise, brother," Michael said quietly.

"Always," Vincent replied, a faint, genuine smile touching his rugged face.
