Chapter 5 - Colette’s Notes

The hospital documented everything.

That became important.

Not because nurses were secretly investigating my mother.

Because nurses chart.

At 10:14 a.m. three days before the slap:

Patient found standing at bedside with grandmother. Patient tearful. Grandmother states toileting attempt. Patient denies need to void. Reinforced activity restriction with family.

Next day, 8:37 a.m.:

Telemetry alarm for tachycardia. Patient observed ambulating approximately six feet with grandmother holding forearm. Nasal cannula tubing tension noted. Patient returned to bed. Grandmother states PT encouraged ambulation. PT contacted and denies giving family-directed walking instructions.

Then today:

Patient found on floor after grandmother physically assisted/pulled patient from bed against reported refusal. Father entered during incident. Immediate assessment performed.

Clinical.

No adjectives like monstrous.

Better.

Then Colette showed me another note she had added after first event:

Grandmother observed recording patient standing on phone. Asked purpose. Grandmother states she is showing father “what child can really do.” Advised that brief standing does not supersede medical restrictions.

There.

My mother had been building a case against my daughter.

Not a legal case.

A narrative.

I asked hospital security to restrict Bernice’s access immediately.

They changed visitor authorization.

Only me.

My sister? I had no sister in prompt. We can invent perhaps no need.

No one else without my approval.

Bernice called fourteen times.

I silenced phone.

Then voicemail:

Griffin, I know you’re angry, but you’re being manipulated by a seven-year-old and a nurse who sees ten minutes of her day.

Another:

Those videos matter. She walks perfectly when you’re gone.

Then:

You are doing exactly what Catherine did. Rewarding fragility.

That was the first time I threw my phone.

Onto couch.

Not wall.

May you like

Growth begins in inches.
