Chapter 14 - Eugenia and Howard

Eugenia’s marriage with Howard had been more complicated than family mythology.
They separated when she was twenty-six.
Why?
Howard worked constantly.
Eugenia felt invisible.
He was controlling with money.
She retaliated socially.
They fought.
She moved to her sister’s apartment for six months.
During that time she dated Malcolm briefly.
Not a one-night villain twist.
A relationship.
Then Howard changed.
Or promised to.
They reconciled.
Eugenia discovered pregnancy.
Dates overlapped enough that either man could have been father.
She told Howard.
That surprised me.
She had not secretly fooled him from birth.
Howard knew uncertainty.
He chose to proceed as father.
They agreed never to discuss it.
That agreement protected peace for thirty-seven years.
Then became poison because secrecy gave Eugenia too much fear.
She believed if Roderick’s genetics surfaced:
Howard’s legacy could be challenged.
Her marriage history exposed.
Her reputation damaged.
Her board position threatened.
So when Niles’s trust vesting approached, Eugenia became obsessed with bloodline.
Paradox.
She knew bloodline was the family’s weakest point.
She tried to weaponize it before anyone could weaponize it against her.
That is how hidden shame behaves.
It attacks outward.
Still:
She chose a five-year-old as target.

No psychological explanation erased that.
