Chapter 22 - Eugenia’s Letter to Roderick

Eugenia apologized to Roderick before she apologized to me.

Her letter said:

I should have told you the truth about Malcolm once you were old enough to carry it.

Then:

Howard and I agreed not to tell you. I used that agreement later as an excuse for continuing silence after he died.

There.

Then:

When Niles’s trust transfer approached, I became afraid that if anyone discovered the genetic mismatch, they would claim you were not Howard’s son and undo everything he built.

That fear was legally wrong.

Alden had told her more than once that adopted and legally acknowledged relationships were protected.

Still:

“I believed blood was where people would attack us, so I attacked there first.”

There.

Then:

“I accused Coralie without evidence and used your son to protect my position.”

Good.

No euphemism.

Then:

“I am sorry I made you take a test because I was afraid of my own history.”

Roderick read it.

Did not reply for a month.

Then:

“I received it.”

Nothing more.
