Chapter 17 - The Birthday Memory

Niles stopped wanting birthday parties.
At six:
“Just us.”
We did.
Cake.
Three cousins.
No giant boxes.
At seven:
Pizza place.
At eight:
Backyard again.
His choice.
No surprise gifts.
We introduced a rule:
Nobody forces birthday child to open anything publicly.
Some relatives thought absurd.
Fine.
Children do not owe live reaction performances.
At eight, someone brought a huge wrapped box.
Niles looked at me.
I said:
“Your choice.”
He approached.
Touched it.
Then:
“Open outside.”
We did.
Inside:
Inflatable dinosaur costume.
He laughed so hard he fell over.
That was the first time a giant gift box became funny again.
No therapy speech.
No applause.
He wore the dinosaur costume for an hour and ran into a hedge.
Recovery can be stupid.
May you like
Wonderful.
