Chapter 1

Officer Grant did not arrest Evelyn because Lisa’s father was a general.

He clarified that within thirty seconds.

“Ma’am, your father’s rank does not decide whether anyone gets arrested.”

Evelyn glared at him.

“Then why are military police in my house?”

“Because this residence is inside Fort Ashford, and the reported assault occurred on federal property.”

The Carter home was temporary senior-family housing assigned to Ryan while his civilian employer completed a defense-support contract on the installation.

Ryan was not military.

Lisa was not military either.

Her small badge identified her as an authorized contractor with secure-site access.

Civilian detectives had come because Evelyn was a civilian and the investigation already extended beyond the assault.

Grant looked at the polished baton lying on the floor.

“Do not touch that.”

Evelyn’s face changed.

“It’s ceremonial.”

“It was also just used to strike someone.”

Lisa stood near the doorway holding a cold towel against her cheek.

A medic examined her.

Bruising.

Swelling.

A superficial cut inside her lip.

No fracture.

Ryan remained near the living-room wall with his phone still in his hand.

Detective Nora Bell noticed.

“Mr. Carter, put the phone on the table.”

Ryan hesitated.

“Why?”

“Because we have a preservation order covering devices connected to the investigation.”

That was when Lisa finally understood something.

The officers had not arrived because she pressed send after Evelyn struck her.

They had already been coming.

Her message merely told them the situation had escalated.

Nora turned to Lisa.

“You sent the emergency confirmation?”

“Yes.”

“At 6:14?”

“Yes.”

“What did it say?”

Lisa answered:

“Proceed.”

Ryan looked at her.

“What did you do?”

Lisa did not answer him.

Nora did.

“She confirmed that an investigative team should execute the documents already authorized.”

Evelyn stared at Lisa as though seeing her for the first time.

“This was planned?”

“The search was.”

Lisa pressed the towel harder to her cheek.

“Getting hit with your baton wasn’t.”

Grant photographed the room.

The baton.

Lisa’s injury.

The position where she had fallen.

Then he asked Ryan the question Lisa had asked minutes earlier.

“Did you see your mother strike your wife?”

Ryan’s throat moved.

“Yes.”

“Did Lisa threaten your mother first?”

“No.”

“Did Lisa hit her?”

“No.”

“Did you intervene?”

Silence.

“No.”

Nora looked toward Ryan’s phone.

“Were you recording?”

Ryan went pale.

Lisa slowly lowered the towel.

“Recording what?”

Ryan said nothing.

Grant placed the phone into an evidence bag after confirming the warrant language with Nora.

Lisa stared at her husband.

“You weren’t frozen.”

Ryan finally looked at her.

“No.”

“What were you doing?”

His answer came quietly.

“Documenting.”

Evelyn snapped:

“Ryan, stop talking.”

May you like

He obeyed immediately.

And that frightened Lisa more than the baton had.
