Chapter 10

Evelyn and Ryan were not trying to stop Lisa from discovering the quality problem.

They knew she had already discovered it.

They were trying to make the government believe the quality problem had been manufactured by Lisa herself.

That was the major twist.

Ryan had realized something weeks earlier.

Deleting records would look like concealment.

Firing Lisa immediately would look retaliatory.

Arguing with her technical findings would fail because some were correct.

So Evelyn proposed a different solution.

Change the meaning of the investigation.

Make the quality review appear to be one part of Lisa’s unstable campaign against her husband.

If successful, every later discovery could be reframed:

Duplicated inspection signatures?

Lisa was hunting for mistakes.

TriArc complaints?

Lisa pressured the subcontractor using her father’s name.

Badge irregularities?

Security precautions against her.

Angry texts?

Proof of instability.

Prescription medication?

Additional context.

Walking out with a bag?

Possible removal of company material.

Physical confrontation?

Best evidence of all.

The first clue had been the insider-risk complaint built from private marital communications.

The second was the bathroom photograph of Lisa’s medication.

That had nothing to do with component quality.

It existed only to build a psychological narrative around her.

The third was Ryan’s camera test.

He did not start recording when Evelyn lifted the baton.

He prepared the angle the night before.

The fourth was the draft badge-suspension instruction specifically anticipating Lisa leaving the house with company material.

And the fifth was Evelyn’s voice note:

Nobody has to prove she’s wrong if she proves she’s unstable.

That was the strategy.

But there was another layer.

The next morning’s contract-extension review included a certification from Carter Strategic stating that management had disclosed all known material quality-control investigations affecting performance.

If Lisa remained the official compliance director at midnight, her open review had to be listed clearly.

If Lisa were suspended before then for alleged insider misconduct, Ryan planned to characterize her review as:

Disputed employee-generated allegations pending personnel investigation.

Not erased.

Downgraded.

The paperwork had already been drafted.

That distinction could have allowed Ryan to argue that no validated material quality investigation existed when the extension certification was signed.

Later, if the component records were corrected quietly, Carter Strategic could say the matter was routine documentation cleanup triggered by a disgruntled employee.

The company might preserve the extension.

Ryan might preserve his debt-backed ownership position.

Evelyn’s family trust might preserve distributions.

And Lisa’s career would carry the stain.

That was why Evelyn kept saying rank.

“You should’ve remembered who outranks you.”

She had spent years resenting the power she imagined Lisa inherited from General Mercer.

Now she tried to manufacture a record proving Lisa abused that power.

Evelyn wanted people to see a privileged general’s daughter who believed rules did not apply to her.

Ryan wanted the same thing captured on video.

The baton strike was not proven to have been planned in advance as a specific act.

Investigators found no message saying:

Hit Lisa.

The evidence supported something subtler and still serious.

Evelyn and Ryan deliberately created a confrontation designed to provoke Lisa into conduct that could be recorded and used to justify removing her from the compliance process.

Evelyn escalated that confrontation into violence.

Ryan watched because intervention would have ruined the evidence he believed they needed.

Then Lisa did the one thing their plan did not anticipate.

She did not hit Evelyn.

She did not threaten anyone with her father.

She did not grab the company laptop.

She stood up.

Walked toward the door.

And pressed send to the investigators already waiting outside.

The record Ryan created to destroy her credibility instead documented the exact moment his own plan collapsed.
