Chapter 9

The insider-risk complaint contained one detail that finally broke the structure open.
It predicted a future event.
Buried on page seven:
Subject may attempt to remove company-controlled devices or records from residence if confronted regarding misconduct. Recommend immediate suspension upon departure from marital home.
The report had been submitted two days before Evelyn struck Lisa.
Lisa had not announced she was leaving then.
She decided only that afternoon after discovering Ryan had withheld more TriArc records.
How did the writer know departure would matter?
Investigators compared the report with Evelyn’s text:
If she leaves, you have what you need.
Then Ryan’s camera setup.
Doorway visible.
Bag rack visible.
Living room visible.
The confrontation was supposed to produce visual evidence of Lisa walking out with her work bag.
What would happen next?
Carter Strategic’s security officer had received a draft instruction.
Not yet activated.
Upon confirmation that L. Carter departs residence with company material during active dispute, disable badge and notify installation security of potential unauthorized removal.
Prepared by Ryan.
Twenty-six hours before the assault.
Lisa stared at the document.
“They wanted me to walk out.”
Nora nodded.
“With something that could be characterized as company property.”
“My laptop?”
“Possibly.”
Lisa’s laptop was company-issued.
But Lisa had already returned it earlier that day through counsel.
Ryan did not know.
The bag she carried contained:
Wallet.
Personal tablet.
Medication.
Cosmetics.
Divorce-consultation documents.
Nothing belonging to Carter Strategic.
That was why Ryan turned pale when she walked toward the door.
The expected evidence was disappearing.
Then she pressed send.
The timing destroyed the rest.
Investigators also found that Ryan had scheduled a company security meeting for 7 p.m.
Forty-five minutes after the confrontation.
Agenda:
Emergency insider-risk action — L. Carter
Before anything had happened.
His attorney argued the meeting addressed existing concerns.
The timing still mattered.
Then investigators recovered a deleted voice note from Evelyn’s phone.
She had dictated it that morning, apparently intending to send it to Ryan.
“Don’t argue facts with her. Make it about conduct. Nobody has to prove she’s wrong if she proves she’s unstable.”
Evelyn deleted the draft.
Cloud backup kept it.
That was the clearest clue yet.
This was not primarily an attempt to refute Lisa’s quality findings.
It was an attempt to make her findings irrelevant by destroying the credibility and access of the person presenting them.
Then Nora placed three documents side by side.
The insider-risk complaint.
The security suspension draft.
The contract-extension calendar.

Extension review began the next morning.
Part 10 explained why the Carter family needed Lisa officially discredited before sunrise.
