Chapter 6

Ryan’s phone contained a video.

The recording began twelve seconds before the baton struck Lisa.

He had positioned the device on a bookshelf.

Camera facing the living room.

Lisa watched only once.

Evelyn stood near the fireplace holding Andrew’s ceremonial baton.

Lisa was saying:

“I’m leaving tonight.”

Evelyn:

“You are not taking company files.”

“They are my work product and preserved through counsel.”

“You are taking nothing.”

“I already sent what investigators requested.”

Evelyn stepped closer.

“You think your father’s stars protect you?”

Lisa answered:

“I have never used my father’s rank against you.”

Then Ryan spoke from behind the camera.

“Lisa, calm down.”

She turned.

“I am calm.”

Evelyn raised the baton.

“You should’ve remembered who outranks you!”

Strike.

Lisa fell.

The recording continued.

Her question to Ryan.

His silence.

Her decision to leave.

Evelyn mocking her.

Lisa pressing send.

Everything.

Nora paused the video.

“Why was he recording before the confrontation became physical?”

Ryan’s attorney argued he anticipated an argument and wanted documentation because Lisa had become “volatile.”

That was exactly the explanation the insider-risk report had prepared.

Then investigators found another file.

Ryan had tested the camera angle the previous evening.

A twenty-second video showed the empty living room.

Evelyn’s voice off camera:

“Too much window.”

Ryan:

“I need the doorway too.”

Evelyn:

“If she leaves, that matters.”

Ryan:

“I know.”

Lisa felt sick.

They expected a confrontation.

Her lawyer reminded her:

“Expected does not automatically mean they planned the strike.”

Correct.

No recording captured Evelyn and Ryan agreeing that Evelyn would hit Lisa.

Ryan could have intended only to document Lisa walking out during a marital dispute.

Then another message surfaced.

Evelyn to Ryan, three hours before the incident:

Make her choose. If she explodes, you have what you need. If she leaves, you have what you need.

Ryan:

Do not push too far.

Evelyn:

She already thinks she’s in command.

Still ambiguous.

Then:

Tonight ends her access either way.

That was not ambiguous.

Lisa looked toward Nora.

“What does ‘either way’ mean?”

Nora answered:

“That is what we are working on.”

The officers had been preparing search and preservation actions before the assault because the insider-risk manipulation and quality investigation were already active.

Lisa’s “Proceed” message simply confirmed she no longer believed evidence inside the Carter residence was safe.

She had arranged that trigger with counsel earlier that day.

If the situation escalated.

If Ryan attempted to seize her devices.

If Evelyn prevented her leaving.

Press send.

Do not fight.

Leave.

That was why Lisa walked toward the door instead of retaliating.

Evelyn thought she was retreating.

Lisa was activating the one thing the Carter family had spent weeks trying to prevent.

Outside scrutiny.
