Chapter 15 - The mark behind the ear

Slowly, reverently, Elena slid her trembling fingers beneath the child’s shoulders and neck, lifting her from the cold mattress.
The moment the baby felt Elena’s warmth, the frantic wailing abruptly softened into small, shuddering hiccups. Elena pulled the child against her chest, burying her face into the damp curls at the nape of the baby’s neck. The scent was unmistakable—the sweet, milky fragrance that every mother knows in the marrow of her bones.
With shaking fingers, Elena pulled back the infant's left ear, searching frantically through the dark curls.
There, precisely where Dr. Cole had claimed a phantom rash had formed on the night of her delivery, was a tiny, faint, crescent-shaped birthmark. The exact mark Elena’s grandmother had carried. The exact mark Elena had dreamed about every night for three agony-filled months.
"It’s you," Elena sobbed, collapsing to her knees on the nursery floor, clutching the baby against her heart. "It’s you... my sweet, beautiful girl. Mommy’s here. Mommy’s got you."
Lorenzo lowered his weapon. He looked down at the woman kneeling on the floor, weeping with an intensity that seemed capable of tearing the walls down. For all his years in the underworld, surrounded by greed, betrayal, and violence, he had never witnessed something so raw, so pure, and so devastatingly powerful.
He stepped over the trembling governess and knelt beside Elena. Without saying a word, he took the warm, dry blanket from the nursery chair and wrapped it carefully around both mother and child, shielding them from the draft of the broken windows downstairs.
Elena looked up through her tears, her eyes meeting his. "She’s alive, Lorenzo. She’s really alive."
"I know," Lorenzo murmured softly, his thumb gently reaching out to wipe a stray tear from the baby’s rosy cheek. The child blinked up at him with enormous, slate-blue eyes, completely unafraid of the mobster whose hands were still stained with the smoke of gunfire.

Suddenly, Marcus appeared in the doorway, his weapon raised, his face tight with urgency.
"Boss," Marcus said sharply. "We have a problem. Dr. Cole didn't just sell this address to Julian Moretti. Our perimeter scanners just picked up four black Suburbans turning off North Street. Moretti’s primary strike team is already here."
