Chapter 8 - The Poisoned Ledger

Elena’s hands trembled as she read the paper beneath the grand chandelier of the foyer.
Her daughter had died in a public municipal hospital twenty miles away. Elena had been told it was sudden respiratory failure. But as she scrolled down to the attending physician's signature at the bottom of the page, her heart nearly stopped.
The bold, elegant signature read: Dr. Adrian Cole, MD.
Elena gasped, catching herself against the marble railing. Dr. Cole was not a public hospital doctor; he was an exclusive private physician catering only to New York's wealthiest elite. Why was his signature on a poor maid’s deceased baby's chart?
She ran up the grand staircase directly to Lorenzo’s office, pushing past the security detail without care.
Lorenzo looked up from his desk, surprised by her sudden entry. "Elena? What's wrong?"
"Look at this," she breathed, laying the hospital document flat on his desk. "This is my daughter's death record from two months ago. Look who signed it."
Lorenzo picked up the paper, his dark eyes scanning the text. When he reached the signature, his posture straightened into a rigid, dangerous line.

"Cole was never affiliated with County General," Lorenzo said, his voice laced with venom. "He has been my family's private physician for twelve years."
"He was there the night my baby died," Elena said, tears streaming down her face. "Lorenzo... what if my baby didn't die of natural causes? What if I was brought into this house for a reason?"
