Chapter 10 - Lenora Leaks Half the Story

Two days after the report, a business gossip site published:

STERLING FIXER QUIETLY WIRED $2.35M AFTER BROTHER’S SECRET DEALS.

The article contained:

My reserve amount.

Date.

Quinn House name.

The copied approval allegation.

No final accounting.

No context that the money sat in escrow rather than simply disappeared.

No explanation that lenders and auditors were informed.

Someone leaked.

Lenora denied it.

Maybe.

Her attorney had the preliminary report.

So did several others.

I did not accuse without proof.

The article said:

Questions remain over whether Gideon Sterling attempted to suppress disclosure of related-party transactions involving his late brother.

False implication.

Walker? No, Sterling Family Ventures. We issued a statement:

Sterling Family Ventures identified historical authorization deficiencies following Caleb Sterling’s death. Independent counsel and lenders were notified. Gideon Sterling funded a temporary reserve from personal assets pending review. The review remains ongoing.

Boring.

Shares? Private vehicle. No market panic.

Rourke? No. Sterling.

One lender called.

Already knew.

Family members did not.

That was where the explosion occurred.

My mother called.

“You knew Caleb forged your approval?”

“No. We know a document was assembled improperly from a prior signed page.”

“Same thing.”

“No.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Because you are not an auditor.”

She hung up.

My aunt called.

Then cousins.

Then Caleb’s closest friend.

One relative accused me of:

“protecting him like a criminal.”

Another accused me of:

“betraying the dead.”

Both within twelve minutes.

Lenora texted:

This is what I warned you about.

I responded:

And?

No answer.

The secret was out.

I still had a daughter.

Still had a job.

Still had a company.

No lightning.

Blackmail loses power when shame becomes information.

That was satisfying.

Then Rachel called.

“Annelise heard a parent at school say Uncle Caleb stole money.”

My satisfaction disappeared.

Consequences travel.

The secrecy had protected children temporarily.

The leak moved the story into their world before we prepared them.

Now we had to explain.

Age appropriately.

May you like

Not lie.
