Chapter 16 - Sloane’s Father Refuses Sterling Money

Peter Mercer requested that no Sterling family member pay for Sloane’s therapy arising from the birthday incident.

I said:

“Why?”

“Because she thinks everything is about money.”

Fair.

“I can cover.”

“I can cover my daughter.”

“Caleb’s trust can pay medical—”

“No.”

He looked at me.

“Do you hear yourself?”

Apparently everyone had joined Rachel.

Peter continued:

“Sloane needs one thing in her life not connected to whether Sterling money is available.”

I said:

“Fine.”

He paid.

Later, when Sloane required a specialized summer program recommended by therapist, cost around $9,600.

Peter and Lenora split it.

No trust.

Their choice.

That was healthy.

Sloane began spending more time with Peter.

Not because court punished Lenora immediately.

Because both parents agreed temporary balance helped.

She visited Denver over summer.

Hiked.

Complained about altitude.

Sent Annelise nothing.

Good.

No forced apology yet.

Peter told me once:

“She asks whether you hate her.”

“I don’t.”

“I told her.”

“Good.”

“She asks if Annelise hates her.”

“I don’t know.”

“Good answer.”

Adults had finally stopped speaking for the girls’ feelings.

Progress.
