Chapter 14 - Rachel Tells Me I Like Being Needed

My ex-wife knew where to aim.

We were standing outside Annelise’s riding lesson.

Rachel said:

“You love being the person who fixes the family.”

“I am good at it.”

“That was not the sentence.”

I looked at her.

She continued:

“Caleb dies, you put in $2.35 million.”

“To protect the vehicle.”

“You could have let independent counsel structure the reserve.”

“It needed speed.”

“Maybe.”

Then:

“Sloane shoves Annelise, you call her trustee.”

I looked away.

“You tried to freeze money.”

“Yes.”

“Lenora threatens you, you invite her to expose everything publicly.”

“She was blackmailing me.”

“She was threatening disclosure.”

“Difference?”

“Blackmail usually seeks value under coercion.”

“She wanted a release.”

Rachel shrugged.

“Ask lawyer.”

Annoying.

Then:

“You like being indispensable.”

That landed.

When we were married, Rachel accused me of solving problems nobody asked me to solve.

Travel schedule.

Her job negotiation.

Her mother’s medical bills.

I thought help meant love.

She sometimes experienced it as takeover.

“Are you saying I caused Lenora?”

“No.”

“Then?”

“I’m saying people in your family are accustomed to one person fixing everything quietly. Caleb did it. You do it. Lenora learned to negotiate with the fixer instead of institutions.”

There.

The structure.

Caleb funded Lenora privately rather than seeking board approval.

I funded reserve privately rather than letting process look messy.

Lenora came to my daughter’s birthday with a release because she thought family problems ended when Gideon signed.

She was wrong.

Maybe because I had taught everyone that was usually true.

Rachel said:

“You want change?”

“Yes.”

“Stop being the secret emergency system.”

Harder than therapy.

I had built a career on being exactly that.

But family was not a portfolio company.

Annelise did not need a turnaround specialist.

She needed Dad.

Different title.

May you like

Different job.
