Chapter 22 - The Foundation Without a Carver in Charge

A year after the audit, something happened nobody in our family expected.

The board appointed a permanent chair.

Not Anatole.

Not Violetta.

Not me.

Dr. Celia Warren stayed.

Then the board changed bylaws.

Family members could serve.

But no Carver would automatically chair.

The finance committee required an independent majority.

I voted for it.

Anatole voted for it.

Violetta was no longer on the board at that point, but publicly supported the change in a private donor letter.

Some relatives complained.

“It’s our foundation.”

No.

That phrase had caused the problem.

It carried our name.

Our grandparents funded it.

But once assets were dedicated to charity, governance owed duties to charitable purposes.

Not family prestige.

The foundation eventually considered changing its name.

It did not.

Instead it added a public governance statement explaining independence.

No confession spectacle.

No laundering history.

Just structure.

Scholarships continued.

More than before.

Without gala excess.

Events became smaller.

Net fundraising actually improved because production costs dropped.

Violetta heard that and said:

“Don’t tell me.”

May you like

I laughed.

Mother would have been unbearable.
